Playing in D1 instead of being relegated to D2 will help. But is his track record all that anyway? Maybe scoring more consistently would help. And if he's serious about playing test cricket, he should be pushing to bat at 3 for Notts.
Had a poor season this season but averages a fraction under 40 and there are players who have been hyped up or played for England with far worse records than him in recent times.

Consider me unconvinced about an average under 40 when he's played much of his career in D2. Maybe you're right that there have been other top order batsmen who have played for the test side recently with worse records, but I'm struggling to think of them. Perhaps moving out of his comfort zone with a relatively small county may force him to up his game.

Durham all out for a record low 61, 1/12 in the follow on.

Good grief.
I was going to comment that 61ao against Leicestershire is a pretty special effort until I noticed who's opening the bowling for them. Still not great, but Mohammad Abbas must come as a step up from most bowlers in D2.

Yorkshire against Hampshire may yet become interesting. Hampshire's lower order have got them close to parity, and Yorkshire's batting is hardly fire-proof for the 3rd innings, especially if Abbott's on song. If Hampshire do end up chasing down a 4th innings total, Yorkshire aren't yet safe.

Somerset are in the ****!! Surrey are making mince meat of everyone they face. They need to be shoved into international cricket test status haha. Surrey are a good case. Burns is a strong leader. Strong captain. Leads from the front. Has the whole side playing for him. Morkel et al running riot with the ball. The rest of them piling it on with the bat.

Only if you want to. tbh I hadn't realised how poor their FC averages were.

EDIT
****, you weren't kidding were you. I genuinely didn't know until looking them up after your last post.
I suppose I'd rate them as lucky rather than Clarke as unlucky. Nobody with that sort of FC average should be anywhere near the test side.
otoh, who'd be a selector trying to build a top order for the test side from our domestic system? Not an easy task.

Durham now 5/30

Somerset 7/57. How long's McKerr need to qualify for England? Surrey not quite going the full Hampshire but not far off.

In Clarke's favour is he is 22 and can and probably will improve off the back of his struggles. I think he will come good and play for a while for England.
