"The last time we played here the spinners came into play in the second innings," he said. "There were big footmarks. The surface is pretty hard. Once it wears out there can be big footmarks and spinners can get a lot [of help] in the second innings. That is how I see the wicket as of now."
Cricinfo reckons Kohli will pick Jadeja + Ashwin. I think Shami will be dropped if it's the case.

Shami blows hot and cold but it always feels like he has a match winning spell just around the corner. Not convinced jadeja will contribute anything positive.

Damned hard to drop Pandya after last match. I feel Shami is the most likely to sit out by far.
Both teams will have a slightly similar look in that case. 2 decent to bad openers, solid No 4, 2 spin bowling allrounders + 1/2 pace bowling allrounders and new keepers + 2 good pace bowlers.

England have basically screwed 3 of their better young batting talents - maybe for good . Hameed, Duckett, and now Pope by seemingly picking them too young and out of position.

Pope picked to bat 4 when he'd basically had one season batting 6 at Surrey on one of the flattest wickets in county cricket. Then dropped after two tests and 3 innings when a lot of batsman were struggling.
Duckett after his second test and scoring 56 off 64 balls in his last innings on a minefield, was then demoted to number 4, a position he had no history of batting in with any success - all the runs he'd scored to that point had come as an opener.
Hameed less so than the others. He got to open and actually looked up to the task until his unfortunate injury. In hindsight his inability to regain any kind of form since injury might suggest that he was picked too early.

picking hameed and duckett at the same time as young as they were was an extremely high risk move.

I know it's been a revolving door in the batting unit for some time and sometimes tough decisions have to be made but ideally you really want to give a (and in these cases very young ) debutant the best chance of success. Pope and Duckett really haven't had that.

I think picking Hameed at a young age was a good idea; he never seemed to be out of his depth.
His loss of form since injury is unfortunate. I'm fairly certain that it won't be permanent; he is a genuinely good batsman.

Disagree on all three counts to an extent.

Pope probably gained a lot out of those two Tests. Likely more than he would have playing for Surrey. I don't really buy the idea that a couple of failures ruin a young talent 'for good'. He's not even been discarded yet, I believe he's still next in line.

Duckett was beyond awful against spin. I agree he got a raw deal batting at 4, but make him open and Kohli would just unlease Ashwin against the two left handed opening bats. He then poured a beer over Anderson's head which didn't help.

Hameed is a strange case, but I struggle to see why picking him early led to him forgetting which end of the bat to hold given his success in India. It could be any number of things.
