England players and selection discussion thread

There really isn't a lot of talent available. Not for test match cricket, anyway. Have a look at all the players who have debuted since 2011 and how few of them have performed successfully and there's no avoiding the conclusion that our domestic system simply isn't fit for purpose, if the purpose is producing test match players. The proposed 100 ball tourney on top of the existing structure suggests that the guys in charge know this but just don't give a damn.
You missed my point slightly, there are genuinely talented players in the England squad (even a theoretical pool of 20 players) but the form / mindset / whatever has not converted that to a consistently winning team. As I said, the ECB failings are for another thread for sure, however, the issue facing Ed Smith and Bayliss is to get the best out of the talent available to ensure England are competitive in the 4th test.

It'll be very hard to leave Mo out following his double century and six-for.
Yeah at this point the question is more whether he comes in as a bat for injured Bairstow or whether he comes in as a spinner for Rashid, than whether or not he plays. I'd be very surprised if he didn't play at all.

Anyone here know much about Essex's Nick Browne? All I know is he's another left-handed opener with a decent FC average and in the runs at Somerset today.

With Bairstow out of action, the question is now moot. When both are in the playing eleven, why shouldn't the clearly better keeper be behind the stumps?
Are you saying Bairstow is the better keeper? I can't say I've paid much attention to either's keeping but for some reason I always just assumed Buttler was the better keeper. Maybe judging by what I saw of Bairstow keeping back 5 or more years ago (wasn't very good).

Bairstow has come on leaps and bounds behind the stumps since getting back into the side. It's probably very close between the two now imo.

Moeen will probably come in, make Kohli his bunny and crush our hopes, LOL.

I hate moeen so much. Worst time for him to hit such form. Grateful England gave us 3 tests without him in the team.

I see in Aggers latest column he is suggesting that if Bairstow isn't available for selection in the next test it is likely the only change made will be Moeen coming in at five.

And I suspect that is the probable way England will go too.

Is there any argument for persevering with Jennings? No scores at all since his recall & I can't really recall any occasions where he's even suggested an air of permanence.

Bollocks for hands too.

Give Burns a go. Or maybe even Mitchell if a right hander would be deemed a good idea.

Why do the selectors bring back failures after a few months out of the side? Vince is back for his 3rd try in Tests. Now played 13 Test and dropped 7 catches.
Jennings is back for the 2nd time and looks as bad as before.

Can you imagine Vince at 2nd Slip and Jennings at 3rd as Root doesn't like being in the slips. Poor ******* bowlers. Better make sure to get lbws, bowled or caught behinds.

Woakes 6 catches dropped of his bowling
Anderson 5
Stokes 2
Broad 2

So the squad to go to Sri Lanka.
Last time drawn series. Only Cook, Broad and Anderson left.
Cricket Records | Records | England in Sri Lanka Test Series, 2011/12 - England | | Batting and bowling averages | ESPNcricinfo

1 Cook
2 Root
3 Stokes
4 Bairstow
5 Burns
6 Pope
7 Buttler

Fast Bowers - Anderson, Broad, Curran, Tongue
Spinners - Rashid Leach Bess Parkinson

Ali 52.27 and Woakes 61.77 left behind because of their overseas records

I am sure Woakes will go as James Taylor is his best friend and Vince because both selectors/captain/coach like him. It wouldn't even surprise me if Jennings was still in the team.

Cook has had a strange career really. Except for a few years circa 2010-12 he has been ''out of nick'' for its entirety yet has somehow compiled 10,000 runs and kept his average above 40! I am not sure whether I'm a Cook supporter or a Cook detractor.
