People said this about Clarke too. Weird **** happens with regards to batsmen and their favoured batting positions, it's best not to mess with the voodoo.
Yeah I don't think you should let this sort of voodoo actually mess with the process of picking the best players (eg. I wouldn't go out and pick a weaker batsman just because he's more suited to #3 so Root can drop down one), but when you're deciding which order to bat them in there's no reason to mess with your best players' heads if you don't have to (so if it's Vince who comes in for example, Root to 4 definitely makes the most sense).

Pretty much agree with that, and I'd echo the Prince's comments about Pope. The choice of a 2nd opener is really tricky. Surely there's someone out there better than Jennings, but I have nfi who.

tbh England's best hope is how often in the past we've come back from a truly abysmal performance for no obvious reason. If memory serves, we were equally dire against SA and Trent Bridge last year, and then came back to win the remaining two games.
Yeah, its why I think we'll end up with another test of Jennings, as much as I couldn't cope with it.

They saw, what, the best part of three overs? So that'd be upwards of 300 pounds for a day of cricket at that rate.

Presuming Bairstow and Cook are out Burns and Jennings to open. I like the idea of Vince as you can drop Root and Pope down a spot each. The downside being Vince has a 24 test batting average. Give Buttler the gloves which will stop people bitching about him at 7 for at least as long Bairstow comes back. Besides he's only really messed up against Oz. Its a dodgy looking side. Keep the pace attack though Curran may bump Woakes. Bring back Ali for Rashid. He's made runs apparently and he is the best **** house bowler I've seen. Certainly better than Rashid.

Aren't there going to be some penalties imposed for abysmal over rates? Or is this series exempt from those requirements (rain, periodic pounding with mallet etc)?

Root misses next test, Kohli the one after. India wins 3-2 with Jadeja MoS

What a win, buzzing :)

Shame we lost the first Tests in SA and England after being in such good positions to win.

A great interview with Kohli and I think it highlights the reason for the disparity between Kohli and Buttler's averages in test cricket. Both are very talented and skilled players. Kohli is a winner and plays hard to win. Buttler it seems cannot cope with the heat in a pressure situation in red ball cricket.

Anyone that didn't see Kohli's interview after this win should see it. A very sincere, honest, analysis of the test match. He doesn't care who scores the runs, or who takes the wickets, as long as India win.

This moves me on to Buttler, who isn't the only one here at fault (focusing on individual test milestones even in meaningless match situations). Buttler has played many brilliant one day innings and t20 innings. His best is the knock in the one wicket win for England recently against Australia.

BBC sport quote - England batsman Jos Buttler said his maiden Test century was his "proudest moment in an England shirt". This makes me worry Buttler has been batting for himself in red ball cricket and it's why he's been failing badly. When the pressure is on you have to bat for the team , not yourself, or you are going to crumble as an individual and team in my view.

Buttler's innings was essentially meaningless in the context of the game, or the series. When he's needed to step up he hasn't. He made runs in this game when the pressure was off. England were dead and buried with nothing to lose in the game. This is showing Buttler isn't up to the task when the heat is on. And that he has a mental block in test, or FC, cricket when the heat is on in the match.

This is why hundreds when a player comes in at 400-2 are devalued hugely. I don't think I'm being harsh either on Buttler. England were never going to chase the target, or survive. The game was dead and Buttler still only averages 34 in the series (and has dropped countless catches) after that knock. So I'm far from happy with him still. They are however timely runs if he can contribute in the next two tests. I believe he has to take the gloves in the next test, as he is inept in the field without them.

I believe India have a chance to turn the series around if England don't take the next two games deadly seriously and select their best available team.
