It's both IMO. It doesn't have to be a good idea to be aggressive. Unless for some reason the captain thinks sticking a bunch of slips in is going to restrict the run rate, it's aggressive, even if it's dumb.
Sounds like Marcuss pulled a Shane Warne there.

ell, two things are clear. 1-4 is nowhere near good enough. Other is we have five people competing to bat 4-7. Bairstow who looks a 6 or 7. Struggles with movement and I don’t think he has the restraint or attitude to bat higher. Buttler I know he just got a hundred but he should definitely bat with the tail. Stokes is poor against spin and generally has a hiccup in concentration. 6 or 7. Moeen is a 7 or 8 at international level. Pope I think isn’t ready unless he’s 6 or 7.

Then we have the always failing top order. Root now looks a shadow of himself. We expect him to not convert now. Cook’s last 3 hundreds have been on utter belters, he has no idea where his off stump is. Jennings is a doughnut.

Now we also have Jonny who refuses to give up the gloves. Root refused to bat 3 for ages and Stokes refuses to field in the slips. Probably for his own good because if he was fielding with Jennings or Cook he’d have surely smacked one of them by now.

Now occasionally the tail wags, Root’s toss win percentage is ridiculous and Jimmy Anderson is still playing. These are not the foundations for success. England need to make bold calls and quickly, away sides usually get one or two wins here but I don’t see England losing anything other than 4-0 or 5 away.

Mitchell, Burns, Clarke, Bell? Not sure. But whatever happens their top order can’t get any worse.

Root shouldn't bat at 3 as he's ****ing useless there. We already have a fragile crap batting line up, so why we're persisting with the idea that Root should bat at 3 and not 4 massively hindering our best bat is beyond me.

Where would you put those guys though? May as well park them at slip or elsewhere in the circle since runs are inconsequential.

Just skimmed through the replay of all 3 sessions in about 90 mins. Fantastic from India again, they could have so easily fallen over after being 0-2 down, so thoroughly deserve the chance to tie things up at Southampton.

Anyone got any dirt on how the Southampton wicket is expected to play?
They were saying on commentary that it is usually a fast pitch. Both teams are so fragile batting-wise that it's hard to predict who it will favor. Will probably depend as much on overhead conditions as the wicket itself.

I think England's use of leg slip/leg gully has been a good example of aggressive field placements that make sense too

He may as well open! It makes no difference. Even during his success England were 30-3.

Has Cook played all his tests consecutively? Would be a bad way for his run to end if it’s becsuse his old man is crook.

Buttler has finally come to life so England just have to get 2 new openers (since Cook is out I heard) and dispose of Pope. Also, get Curran back in place of either Rashid or Broad who seems to have left his mojo behind at Land's End.

Burns
Stoneman
Root
Malan/Random
Moeen
Stokes
Buttler +
Woakes
Curran
Broad
Anderson

Is this it? Or is there another opener out there?

Edit: Bairstow's out as well, I suppose. So, Moeen in then for Bairstow and Rashid to be dropped?

Whatever they do I hope they don't bring back moeen. Superior option to Rashid in every way, hope they continue being dumb.

Burns for Cook and Moeen for Bairstow I think it will be.
Yeah, there's no way they're dropping Pope or Broad. Nor should they.

You don't decide to gamble on a 20 year old with limited FC experience at #4 and then backflip as soon as he plays a **** shot in his second Test. He will get the series at the very least, probably longer even if he's failing unless Bairstow's replacement (whoever that ends up) cements a spot and becomes undroppable.

Vince is having his best season in the CC and is currently 3rd in the averages (5+ innings) behind Burns and Pope, the next best being Hildreth averaging about 8 runs less. Moeen is a far better player than Rashid and Root obviously doesn't trust Rashid so lets just make the swap already, plus Moeen has just scored a double. No Idea who to give the chance to open with Burns if Cook isn't available.

I still wonder whether just stealing a 1st Div county's opening pair will be more fruitful than just dumping either Cook or Keaton "Footwork, like form is just imagined" Jennings.

Pretty much agree with that, and I'd echo the Prince's comments about Pope. The choice of a 2nd opener is really tricky. Surely there's someone out there better than Jennings, but I have nfi who.

tbh England's best hope is how often in the past we've come back from a truly abysmal performance for no obvious reason. If memory serves, we were equally dire against SA and Trent Bridge last year, and then came back to win the remaining two games.
