Alex Lees really struggling. I remember coming through at Yorkshire, Boycott said that Lees could be better than Root. Certainly hasn't gone that way. Looked decent early career but I think he tried to become more aggressive/dominant type opener in the Matthew Hayden type mould and it just didn't work for him. Now he doesn't seem to know where he is coming from.

Speaking of a struggle, I pity anyone at Scarborough who has to watch Pujara right now.

yes pujara seems to have done more damage to his chances of playing for india this summer by actually playing cricket, than if he was sitting on the sofa like Kohli. Averaging 13 in the championship, coupled with his poor test record for india outside Asia = danger.

Friends of mine at Scarborough tomorrow, bit jealous tbh, weather being so warm would be worth nipping down to the beach and having a paddle..:D

Has James Vince sorted his technique out or is it that the gulf to test cricket is too much for him?

At Scarborough, Morne Morkel attempts to harness the psychological effect the last over of the day can have on a batsman by making it last as long as possible:

I think I remember predicting that Kent were in for a crap season given they had no bowling.

Doing pretty dam well given that prediction. Even resting Henry and Stevens, with the 50 over final in mind, they look like thrashing middlesex.

More runs from pope but left stranded at the end. Probably needs to bat higher second time around, even if he is keeping.

It does seem odd that Patel bats two places above Pope. otoh they may take the view that Pope's doing so well at 6 that they don't want to move him.

Anyway, Morkel's opening burst has put Surrey right back in the game. Hopefully the timing if the lunch break will work for us and a refreshed Morkel can repeat the damage at the start of Session 2.

He is starting to look like the real deal isn't he?

Meanwhile, Yorkshire's top order completely miss-firing once again. It's like watching England...

Vital passage of play at Scarborough, with Tattersall and Bresnan together. It was their first innings partnership that put Yorkshire in the driving seat, but if they go cheaply then Surrey probably won't be chasing too many. It looks like they are trying to see of Morkel without worrying too much about run-scoring just yet.

Second fifty in the game for Burns. Career average first class cricket getting closer to 45 now. He should be in the England side in my view.

Vince is a very good player. I’m not sure if he had the mental strength and ruthlessness for test cricket. Recently he’s getting big scores and possibly developed a more competitive edge and confidence about his own game. Could be worth another go at some point over someone like Malan. If he did play again they could only really give him 3 more tests and then call it a day though if he didn’t perform. I think he’s struggling to ever play a limited overs game again due to lack of power, england’s Batting line up is ridiculously strong in limited overs cricket to the point Joe Root is looking the weakest link now in the limited overs batting
