I do remember Rooney playing extremely well in some matches for England, but he always seemed to miss important games. Is that an accurate impression?

BARNES OUT
He also stomped on Carvalho's balls, good guy Wayne.

(I've ****ing hated Wayne Rooney as a player, so you won't find me praising him very often.)

He was very exciting in Euro 2004 from what I remember, and hardly did anything of note in any other international tournament. Was unlucky to get injured before the World Cup in 2006 and should never have played that tournament.

Yeah it was ridiculous. We lost Owen to injury during that tournament too. He wasn’t the player he had been by then but was still quality, a fit Owen and Rooney in that tournament and we’d have been a threat I reckon, though the same old frailties haunted us in the end.

Rooneys injury against Portugal in the 04 Euros was a hammer blow too. A big ‘if only...’ that one
