Nah. Without Rabada's spell in the 1st innings at PE when Smith was set then this is a very, very, very different looking series
Rabada, ABdV and Elgar MVP's.... with good contributions by Markram, Philander, Morkel and Maharaj.

Amla and QDK on/off but played their part. Ngidi showed his potential in his 1 test. Faf was poor until his final century, And Bavuma/deBruyn continues to be the biggest headache.

Yeah, many contributions. But Rabada won the series.

It's weird how none of this fanfare would have happened for Morne if Steyn had been fit. Retirements are weird

But it is seriously weird to think that 15 days ago this was an absolutely even and completely unpredictable series

If at that stage you'd heard "one captain gets banned for ball tampering, opposition win 3-1" you'd have probably have even guessed backwards.

Less than 10 days again, Smith was the golden boy of batting, Australia were happy to have unleashed ''the bull'' again and the notion of a Darren Lehmann crying in a press conference would've been laughed out of court.

A week's a long time in cricket (to paraphrase Harold Wilson).

This must be one of our greatest sides - up there with the 1970 and 2012 vintages.
Not quite there yet... but building nicely. Will have an easier road for this next year, a win in SL would be nice.

And Smith was averaging 23 and Warner in the 30s so these two would've had to seriously ton-up in the 4th test to have come out with a good series. Nobody can really blame their absence then. Paine, Australia's batting genius.
I don't think any serious cricket observer would make the case that Warner/Smith would've made a difference; they were completely owned!!

Well done, Saffers! Even if dragging the second innings on and on was truly cringe worthy, the finish more than compensated by being truly magnificent.

Markram has to be SA's biggest plus coming out of this series. We already knew Rabada was awesome and AB had shown he was back to somewhere close to his best against India, but Markram's emergence has completely transformed the look of their batting lineup. They probably have the best opening pair in the world now

2012 was an excellent side. I personally don't rate the 70s side that highly tbh. They never played half of the test playing nations of that time.
