***Official*** England in New Zealand 2018

yep, given how easy batting has looked since the first hour of the day, you'd say NZ wouldn't be unhappy with the scorecard, but boy have they let England off the hook.

England not in the position I'd want but what a top day's play of fascinating test cricket- exactly what the game needed after the week or so it's had!

Good on England for fighting back and setting up a potentially enthralling test, though NZ's tactics during the Bairstow-Wood partnership left much to be desired. If the pitch is this good however, knocking over England's top 5 so cheaply may yet be the difference in this game.

Last I saw England had just lost their 7th wicket so pretty disappointed to see England near 300 now, though must've been a good innings from Bairstow.

Seeing the comments here about Williamson not bowling Sodhi did annoy me though - please, just have a little faith in your bowler, especially your spin bowler that surely needs it more than most.

We should still get the best of the batting conditions on days 2 and 3 though.

Excellent from England, they slightly shade the day for me. 320ish batting first could be really handy if their new ball bowlers turn up.

Not sure why the pitch is pretty flat. The only way England shade the day is if u think the nz batsmen will completely balls up there first innings. The English bowlers will have to bowl a completely different length than what they have been to get any assistance.

While this is true, even on a docile pitch NZ's lineup is still battling for consistency particularly in the event of Williamson/Taylor having an off day. Unlike Auckland there is some scoreboard pressure to be factored in.

Happens when you only have two bowlers. de Grandhomme is worthless, Williamson doesn't trust Sodhi and Wagner is nothing but a sideshow.

De Grandhomme actually bowled pretty well and beat the bat quite a bit. That sideshow is a world-class sideshow.

Southee bowling well is pretty annoying tbh since he is pretty average overall, with boult and wagner always making him look better than he is. Without those 2 in the side he would be averaging worse than chris martin with the ball imo.

Happy with the day overall. Although if it moves around then we are batting a player short as latham is a walking wicket.
