we're going to pay dearly for trying to sneak to the new ball

this isn't CdG time. they'll score 300 if we're not careful.

I'd honestly be more comfortable resorting to CdG with the new ball than now, even if they didn't want to bowl Sodhi. He's still threatening at that stage, so you still would've had genuinely testing bowlers all the way through. Colin bowling with the old ball while New Zealand are on top should never really be a thing (perfectly fine if there's a top order batsman and NZ and really are just waiting for the new ball, of course).

Really though it should've just been Sodhi.

Wood has always struck the ball nice and cleanly. We are still way off par though, no demons in this pitch at all.

Did Athers just bring up the introduction of concussion substitutes in CC, at which point Doull brings up rugby as an example and not the Plunket Shield which has already implemented it?

I was actually mildly disappointed in Atherton for not knowing about it (I would've expected him to ask how it'd gone in NZ, and he didn't), but Doull not knowing about it either just made it hilarious instead.

He's always batted below Broad when they've both played so I wasn't expecting anything different here, but realistically no-one with a First Class batting average over 20 should be batting below Broad in 2018, so hopefully this impressive little innings is already enough to force the swap in the next innings (or the next match at least).

Sometimes Kane is over-conservative, in the same way as BMac was sometimes over-funky. Seamers have taken the wickets today, but #9 is 36 (45), and no sign of the leggie (who has a good googly).

I think we can note Kane down as another who never got what "earns the right be sggresive" meant.

You actually earnt the right here, but still too chicken to bowl your leggie to the tail with the old ball. Until the 76th .......

mark richardson openly admitted he doesn't follow the Shield earlier. He had no idea Wellington were having a good year.

this just isn't good enough from NZ, and very 2009. The tail is having far too easy a time of it and the blame is directly on Wagner's lack of penetration today and Kane bowling medium pacers.

does anyone know why overton was dropped? I thought he has been one of england's better players throughout the ashes and also the first test in nz. Shows some fight! Glad to see they finally dumped moeen ali tho :)

Wood had been talked about as someone they needed in the side to help England with their woes during the Ashes. Who knew it'd be for batting  fair play
