Baggy Green ball tampering: Bancroft, Smith and the Aussie "Leadership Group"

Removed.

What did it say?
It was "knew you'd come through for me boys!" with a pic of Carragher + Smith + Lehmann. It was kind of tasteless, but knowing the stuff Carragher has been subjected to online in the last few weeks (admittedly for something really quite gross in the... icky sense), I still laughed. Gallows humour.

I mean if you wanted to get away with something illegal in the sporting world (particularly in Aus) this was the week to do it in....

A football club announced that they were suspending/fining their players for betting on one of their matches, actually.

At 7:30pm...

Wasn't sure if I should post anything since people who do not post here regularly are frowned upon.

But I had to share that:

I am German - living in SA for decades and learnt to love cricket to such an extent that I spent weekends umpiring lower league cricket. (just as where I am coming from).

I found 2, yes 2! articles about this sandpapergate in a leading German Magazine (Der Spiegel). They didn't say anything we already know but ..... 99 percent of Germans have not even an idea or do know that cricket exists as a sport. The other 1% are expats from the subcontinent and some Brits and Aussies.
This shows you that either the summer hole hits early or how an event can get blown totally out of proportion. It's like Australia press reporting that some German Ice hokey player tried to fiddle with a puck in a game. Just totally over the top.

My 2 cents:

Now I know about the holier than holy approach from Aussies teams at times and this will hit harder if it happens in their cricket than, let's say, India or Pakistan. But the punishment is irrational and bears no relation to the offence. I say that as a huge Saffer supporter. And then the 100 Social hours - I mean who would think this will be looked upon by anybody with an average brain capacity as something that is formulated by an adult in full supply of sanity. It would be hilarious in any other circumstance.

I really hope Smith and Bancroft penalties get reduced. I also hope that somebody is looking after these guys. Smith is cricket - he doesn't know much else and people do funny stuff when the rug is completely pulled out under their feet. CA has thrown them to the wolves big time.

Warner - well, his problem is that he needs good and straight and consequent leadership to keep his personalty traits in check. Unfortunately that was nowhere to be found in the setup he was operating in.

end of ramble

It’s important we remember there is a young man at the centre of all this ... What’s important now, is Cameron is given the appropriate support.
So we fired him. We do believe that that is the most appropriate support that we could give him.

What an absolute load of garbage that statement is. At least own it.
Suppose they only following what the IPL teams did but I did hope they took a different view on all this. Especially Bancroft being not as travelled (money earning). He would have given his all to prove some points too about his ability.

Sutherland is not resigning. If anything this has strengthened his resolve to get Australian cricket where he should be, he says.

This part.... well Mr Sutherland I suggest you don't watch it.

"I haven't seen Steve Smith's press conference, but I have had a lot of messages and will watch it."

Oh man.. that was very painful to watch when he broke down at the end. Hope he comes back stronger is all I can say.

He's a remorseless runscorer, so let him come back and focus on that, while someone else leads the team.

I wasn't saying they weren't in the right to drop him as their player but the statement itself is a load of horseshit. They spend two paragraphs talking about how remorseful he is, how is young and made a mistake and that we should all rally around him, then just end it with a "but yeah we're rid of him anywayssssss". Just own your decision.

The whole thing makes one wonder how in the world did Smith and Warner get to occupy the top two jobs in Aussie cricket. They just are nowhere near the leadership material they were thought to be and I am pretty sure it could have been assessed from their younger days.

Amazing batsmen but not leaders.

They need someone who is gutsy old mannered bloody tough and ..... hairy.... like the Katman now. They need guys who have a proven track record of being bloody tough and Australian right from the times they picked up a bat and started playing. Someone who can make the other teams squirm in envy and fear and teammates with awe.

I think in the present setup Lyon is closest to this ideal. He’s one guy who showed true Australian grit and attitude - one who rose from being a groundsman to one of the most successful bowlers for his country - and continuing to improve with each match. That is a byproduct of his commitment and inner strength that others can feed from. I have no idea whether he is a great tactician... but tactics can be supplemented by the dressing room.

Ps - no disrespect to Paine. I don’t know much about him and believe he has never really got the long run requisite for the job.
