It's actually credit to the Indian system that however influential or high strung the accused were, they were banned. Unlike how ACB hushed up Warne and Waugh matter with John the bookie. So no moral high ground there as well mate.

And more to the point India never really tried to exhort other teams to take it as an example and preach stuff like hard but fair cricket and all that.

So once again, missing my point entirely. Sure, maybe Warne and Waugh were involved in match fixing. But my original question was along the lines of "Is it appropriate to start threads directed at the indiscretions of particular nations at a time when emotions are going to be boiling over? Especially if you are a mod?"

I think Burgey has taken the thread in the spirit I meant. He has been excellent and made exactly the points I wanted to see being made. As usual, he does it better than most people.

If you do want to complain about the forum atmosphere aspect of this thread (and that definitely exists you're absolutely right), then perhaps you should start by not trying to poison the well. There is nothing wrong with discussing the hypocrisy of a culture. I'm going to replace "Shenanigans" with "Hypocrisy" in the thread title because that's what this is supposed to be about.

***** is correct in that likening behaviour to an animal is not necessarily racist.

We describe behaviour as bullish, mule-like etc. without racial connotations.

I used to liken behaviour to baboons when people were acting like them, because it's amazingly descriptive. I used this without regard for race, and in describing myself. I used it as an insult when behaviour was wild and aggressive, and as a compliment/simply descriptively when describing behaviour that was wild and fun.

I no longer use the term because of how people could potentially interpret it. I could use it to describe the behaviour of a white person as baboon-like one day and a black person as baboon-like the next day in exactly the same circumstances, but be flayed alive for the second usage. It's not worth using a term like this on black people because it is so likely to be misinterpreted, and it's not worth using a term at all if it can only be used on one race- it was not a racially loaded description when I applied it to all races, but it becomes one if I refuse to use it on all.

Was Gavaskar being racist? No way for me to know. I've got to say, when I read it I thought it was the most racist thing written since plinth helmets went out of fashion until ***** posted. Best to just avoid using descriptions like that these days, because you know it will be interpreted badly.

Brett Lee would sell his brother to get more airtime on Indian TV and another commentary gig. Maybe a bit harsh, but anything he says can be taken with a grain of salt as to whether he actually believes it, or whether it's what "should be said" for him to get hired again.
