Every one has been quick to put the knife into the skipper...How about innocent until proven guilty..CASE SCENARIO: Bancroft may have overheard what "Senior Leadership" were talking about and took it upon himself to do the dirty deed. When he was caught out, Smith then stood up as his skipper for him, thereby making himself to appear the instigator and taking the pressure off the youngster. Having followed a lot of sport over many years Smith would not be the first skipper, in any sport, to fall on his sword for one of his team...after all that's what good leaders do

Man, what a fall from grace for Steve Smith

He's a wonderful young man, and a great batsman who was being talked about as second to Bradman

Now his reputation is in ruins

Illustrates why jails are full, I guess.... - good people do stupid things
He’d still win a newspoll against Turnbull

Didn't Atherton rub handfuls of dirt on the ball? I don't think any of the ball tampering methods should be allowed but i also don't think this one is some how warranting harsher punishments than previous incidents got. Where they need to be harsh is in CA shutting down this leadership team because even without this incident they've clearly got issues and attitudes, the side has been an embarrassment on a few tours recently.

I am not saying it is worse, but it certainly isn't any better
Don't be stupid of course it is. Go read the other tampering thread......think everyone is in favour of allowing spit that is induced with whatever, not one person is saying Bancroft's tape is acceptable.

And on the 2005 Ashes........did anyone ever ask the question why Ricky Ponting chewed his way through 50 packs of gum a day?

What was Athers punishment for that? I would say it is on a very similar level to this.

He could argue it was spur of the moment though, Smith admitted this was pre meditated. I guess Bancroft could have said he found the tape on the ground off a bat/strapping whatever and was using it but still usually when players are caught they have some excuse like Athers saying he uses the dirt to dry his hand/ afridi saying he was smelling the ball even if you don't believe it there's some excuse but rubbing yellow tape then putting it down his pants is hard to explain away.

Personally I think the ICC should be tougher on ball tampering and I've always thought that but to do that they need to clearly define what is and isn't tampering because right now there's a lot players do that doesn't get picked up and is common, theyneed to be consistent with punishment which is something they've struggled with in other areas of the game too.

I'm no lawyer, but may I humbly proffer what may be an improvement on the case scenario:

CASE SCENARIO: The "Senior Leadership" were talking about how they would never ever 'cross the line', how they would never ever etc. etc. Bancroft may have overheard part of that truly noble conversation. However with this utterly unacceptable cacophony generated by the cheating Saffer fans, failed to hear the 'never ever' portion of the aforementioned noble conversation. And took it upon himself etc. etc.

The rest of the scenario is absolutely impeccable; it should stay as it is, word for word.

Was just reading that, kept the captaincy and didn't cop a ban.

I hope they don't go crazy over the punishment, would hate to see any of these players cop lengthy bans over this.

As I keep saying though I think Lehman has to go, not just for this but the whole tour has been a really poor reflection on his management and the behaviour of this Aussie team in generally the last few years.

Did Athers, who in full disclosure i loved as a kid, pick the dirt off the floor or did he bring it on from outside? my feeling is that it's the pre-meditated bringing an object on to the pitch that represents the extra moral line.

I don't know 100%, he had it in his pocket i assume he filled his pocket during the game. He may also be telling the truth saying he kept it in his pocket to dry his hands and then just decided to rub it on the ball during a game. It's different to bringing the tape out there planning on doing this (which Smith admitted to) but it's close enough that if Athers got off with a fine then the people calling for 1 year bans and the like for Smith are clearly being absurd.
