***Official*** England in New Zealand 2018

Moss

International Captain
Think was 6 wickets to get on the final day in 2013, when Prior and co saved it for England? Odds seem stronger in NZ's favour this time around though. Interesting that a venue which was cut from the calendar for so long should have its fair share of memorable test matches since.

450% over is really when you're in trouble
This explains why my father is confident in calling rugby league games "all over" against his team at 0-0 after 5 minutes. I guess "all over" is 100% over - ie. not very over at all - in the same way 1080p is "full HD".

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Seems to happen almost every time we play them. Alex Tudor got 99*, ffs (admittedly as nightwatchman).

With all the talk about the selection, it'll probably be Overton.
Given his form in the first innings, and how England have batted so far this innings (i.e. quite alright), he's due for 200*

League actually only requires 90% over to constitute as all over.

That's ****ing poor from Root tbh
It wasn't pragmatic for sure, with so little time to go might as well have retired abd resumed tomorrow, no one would've batted an eyelid. Having said that it was a nasty blow to receive at that point in time, his immediate reaction would possibly have been to just get the day over with.

Is Root actually allowed to get out?

Both innings now, Boult has bowled him a couple of pearlers and he’s getting ripped into for getting out.
Haven't seen the wicket yet but it's more that the pattern is frustrating- particularly given this 'conversion rate' thing that it's now impossible to avoid talking about.

It is impossible not to talk about.....impeccable up to 50, then something rash or avoidable, This last one...just retire hurt..its allowed, one ball to go , its a no win situation isn't it?

The phrase 'conversion rate' started appearing I think last summer, I kind of dismissed it at the time as I'd never heard it be a big thing for any other player. But now it's pretty much undeniable, a self-fulfilling prophecy even. At the end of the day I reckon your star man getting a ton every couple of innings is probably going to win you a lot more tests than getting fifty almost every time.

I can remember Boycott talking about it years ago..Not Conversion rate, as you say thats a fairly modern term....but the fact of getting to 50, then taking a couple of overs to more or less start again.....
Its incremental..
In the local Sunday league we used to do it when we got 5 :D

It's odd because it seems crazy to complain about a constant stream of half centuries, and yet…

If Malan or Ali or even Bairstow were doing the same I'd be ecstatic, but Root has all the same ability as Kohli or Smith or Williamson yet there just seems to be a huge mental block. Really frustrating more than anything else.

It has to be a mental block...I would love to know the number of times he has got to 50 with a boundary...then got out, trying for another boundary, ..Its got so you sort of expect it to happen...

Not sure how you fix it either, give him some vouchers for a meditation course with a bunch of middle aged women in Aylesbury or something

Just something that can teach him to clear his head and calm down after he gets the half ton.

game is 200% over

bairstows form in the past 12 months has fallen off and stokes is coming back into the side.
No it's not. It's a fairly flat deck that has had just over 2 days play on it. England bat reasonably low, it's still on.

And I don't get the Root thing about he should've retired. What, so someone else could come in and get a glove on that snorter from Boult? What'd we be saying then? OK, fair enough his conversion rate is no good, but as captain he had to stay out there. And he got a beauty. Happens.

You know what I love about the Southee-Boult opening partnership

in the u19 CWC they played together - Southee was the world beater hooping the ball at decent enough pace and Boult looked like a little turtle running in bowling at park cricket speeds.

Boult is now Trent Akram. Tim is...

They batted one and half sessions yesterday and gave up three wickets, meaning an average of two down a session. Its extremely unlikely they can keep that up as they go down the order and that's what they'll need to secure the draw.

So basically you're looking at Bairstow, Ali, Woakes, Stokes, Malan and the tail all surviving a session or so each- and based on current form I'd still make NZ strong favorites.

Yeah, we're favourites for sure. But it'll be no pushover.

If Root had retired ..It was stumps...No-one else would have had to come in and Root would have carried on today....there woulkd have been no "Snorter"
