Gutted about Munro ... he must have got a t20 contract that coincides with the end of our summer? Otherwise what’s the motivation ...

Great news for Nicholl though.

Wish Munro had been given a shot this season or last. He could really have played a McCullum type role for us ...

ND going anti engine room? Basically specialist batsmen down to 8, then a spinner and 2 seamers?

NORTHERN DISTRICTS
HR Cooper, DR Flynn (c), B Popli, DG Brownlie, BJ Watling (wk), DJ Mitchell, TL Seifert, NF Kelly, JG Walker, JD Baker, ZN Gibson, BR Hampton (12th)
Oh no, it looks like Kelly will be getting plenty of bowling in that side. That's never a good thing.

Interesting. ND had a couple of mid season T20 games where they picked 3 specialist bowlers, then Mitchell and Devcich as 4th / 5th bowlers. Worked OK then. But Mitchell as 3rd seamer for a 4 day game is a stretch, and Devcich > Kelly for 5th bowler left arm darts. Hampton in squad but 12th man. Perhaps they don't over-estimate the Canty batting lineup?

Stuff preview said Kuggs and Arnel rested. Kuggs now picked for both NZ XI warmups vs Eng anyway.

Yeah Devcich is a proper bowler in domestic T20 cricket. Kelly's bowling in a FC game.. not so much.

Don't think so, from memory the article says he's pulled out of the Pakistan League for 'R&R' or something similar? He is in the IPL, then Caribbean, and I presume England etc.

Sounds like he's developed a CBF approach to four-day cricket, which is sad. Can't help but think playing Test cricket actually held him back from playing more, as if there was any relevance in playing a Test 6 years ago when he should never have been picked, and hardly could be blamed for being so. If there's another player in the future in NZ who averages 50+ but can't crack the Test side, I'd be very, very very, surprised. I agree, it's sad he couldn't have been given the chance to play a game-busting role for us.

so statistically the best nz FC batsman of the past two decades is never going to play test cricket. If that doesn't say "**** selection policies" I don't know what does.

We will never know but come on, some of you fellas are crazy. Munro was never going to be a test batsman of note for NZ. England have figured him out already, what do you think would happen in a test series with the ball actually doing something off the pitch?

Presumably he'd get out within 20 or so balls which is what our current middle order does, but with decidedly more runs.

Is Will Young even relevant anymore?
He should be. 25 years old. FC average 38. 50 over SR 84. T20 SR 130.

Was probably 1 year behind Nicholls in development path, but Nicholls has made enough runs in his first two full-ish seasons to hold his test spot and probably ODI spot for another season, and Young had a poor NZ A tour in India.

Hopefully Young is being considered for test middle order backup, after lack of FC runs from Broom / Neesham. But suspect that if Taylor is out for a test, Hesson will want experience, so Guptill will get a shot at #5.

In a year or two after Rosco's gone we might see him at international level in some capacity, I guess.

It's funny because guys not too dissimilar to Young have gotten gigs in the Australian test team in recent times and yet he can't break into our squad. Not a criticism of Australia as they seem to be prepared to have a go on players and manage their potential better than we do.

But NZ selectors take far braver punts that couldn't be further from a conservative policy on bright stars, Neil Broom, Luke Ronchi, or that time Aaron Redmond randomly played a test in 2013.

Big stars, huge stars. My only gripe is that guys like Papps and Daniel Flynn have yet to be given chances.

Shame about Munro, just when he's looked like the attacking no.5 to fit the Brendon McCullum role.
