Each to their own but when I met him when he was playing at Durham a few years back he was lovely. Having said that he is a relation of a family friend so maybe different with us?

There was a recent spate of allegations levelled at Sangakkara and his manager Charlie Austin regarding what was called the #AustinMafia. Charlie used to be a writer for Cricinfo but settled in SL ages ago and started his player management business and was one of the first to do so in SL. With his first mover advantage he had pretty much the entirerity of the bigger names in SL cricket on his roster. With some notable exceptions like Tilekeratne Dilshan.

Anywho, the allegations were that, through Sanga who was captain and Mahela - who is also managed by Charlie , Austin influenced SL selections and what not so he could get the players he managed into the side.

There was a big campaign in the SL media to oust this as a major development but no one actually brought forward any evidence apart from just hinting at things that happened etc.

Dilshan has also publically said that he never got Mahela and Sanga's support when he captained because they supported Mathews for the captaincy role (Mathews is also managed by Charlie A). I think there might be some detail on this in his book? I think Fred said he's read the book so he migth be able to shed some light here?

Anyway, as far as I know these are all just rumours that were reported in local media that was never proved. But all these allegations surrounding Charlie A has been around for a long time.

I do, however, know for a fact, that Sanga has a well cultivated public persona which he does not break. I know a writer who has interviewed both him and Mahela extensively throughout their careers and this is something he said is quite noticable between the two. Aka Mahela more approachable, Sanga always very guarded on what he says and how he is perceived.

There are also more accusations I've heard of Sanga of a personal nature which I won't go into here because I've only heard these 2nd hand. But I have heard the same stories many times. But it's his personal life so I don't really care.

Hope this sheds some light.

At the moment all we have is your opinion, and no doubt you'll correct me if I'm wrong but I suspect you've never met the bloke - not closing my mind to what you say, but I'd like to see some evidence that your opinion is shared by others - can you link us to anything that would help illustrate your point?
I've met him a few times actually and even had a drink with him in a guest house owned by him in Kandy. He just seemed really full of himself and was a bit rude to someone playing in the A team who was also present at that time. I know quite a few other people who have said similar things about his attitude when he was captain. However, I can only comment on instances when he was captain, so perhaps he's completely normal when he doesn't have the burden of captaincy.

I can't give you any links to articles to support any of this, so I'm happy for you to consider this as my opinion and disagree with it. Anyway, the point I was trying to make was that the personality of the player need not affect his selection here. You'd pick Sangakkara at 3 in an AT Sri Lanka XI regardless.

When you put it like that I have no problem accepting what you say

- Pick the SL teams second spinner/third seamer
- Select a player to bat at 7 OR 6, might have to move Chandimal up depending on who is selected.

- Name a SL A XI opener

omg how did I miss this.

Rangana Herath
Thilan Samraweera.

Marvan Atapattu

I think Samaraweera has done enough over Mathews. Mathews was a sensation in 2014,but hasn't been able to translate that in recent times. On Samaraweera, he's your old school test batsman, with plenty of patience to spend on the wicket. Can't forget his Durban 100 in 2013, that lead to our first test win in SA

Just checked their records and it does look like Samaraweera has done a lot better than Mathews. Bit surprised at his stats since I feel Mathews is the better batsman.

I like Samaraweera so I'm happy to change my vote.

Need Matthews in case it’s a seaming deck. Team has a billion spinners and only two seamers.

Picked Mathews over Samaraweera due to him bowling seam up. Suppose I could've picked a 3rd seamer instead but none of them are good enough.

Same as everyone for me.

And yes Samaraweera has a surprisingly good record (from an outsider pov). Was he a quiet achiever or where his runs not as impactful as others from that era?
Or just Lankans don't get the exposure they deserve (outside the top 3 players)
