Atapattu only averaged 32 against top 8 teams despite multiple unbeaten double centuries. In fact, if you exclude the two unbeaten double centuries, his average against top 8 teams is just 29. I'm going for Dilshan who averaged no less than 12 more against the top 8 sides (!) and was also an excellent fielder.
Malinga
Jayawardene

Surely de Silva should be the one to come in at 5?
They've both batted at 5 at some point and it hasn't really made a noticeable difference in their performance. I feel de Silva is the better batsman so he comes in ahead of Mahela.

I'm surprised that people pick Atapattu ahead of Dilshan. I think Dilshan has done just about enough over his career to take that opening slot

Yeah I don't think people realise quite to what extent Atapattu's overall record was distorted by his destruction of Bangladesh and Zimbabwe plus literally a couple of epic innings against the big boys.

vs Bangladesh & Zimbabwe: 1,395 runs @ 87.18
vs top 8 teams: 4,107 runs @ 32.85
vs top 8 teams excluding two double centuries: 3,699 runs @ 29.59

Dilshan averaged 41 as opener against the top 8 teams (no less than 12 more than Atapattu!) and was also an excellent fielder. This really should not even be close.

Fun fact: Herath actually has more Test wickets as an opening bowler than Malinga, at the awesome average of 17:

I picked Malinga anyway but that sort of thing almost makes me want to say "**** Sri Lankan quicks" and just pick three specialist spinners.
How many times did Herath open the bowling in the first innings? I would imagine most of those instances would have been in the second innings on spinning tracks: i.e. ideal conditions for him that are not representative of what an opening bowler is normally up against.

It's kinda a Greenidge/Haynes type of situation with Jayasuriya and Atapattu. Sanath and Marvan have longevity opening together.
