Overreaction, it's been ages since Kohli dropped Pujara. Rahane was NOT a clear cut case when India arrived in SA.
Yes, Rahane did great in this Test but we've got the benefit of hindsight now. He could barely put bat to ball across 5 innings against Lakmal, Lahiru Kumara, Sandakan etc. He wasn't just failing, but genuinely looked awful.

It's a fine balancing act between proven class and recent form but I don't think it was wrong to choose Rohit ahead of him for the first two games.

I think it was wrong but atleast understandable.

Dropping Bhuvi was madness.

This bowling attack is good. Weird as it sounds, Ishant has "evolved" into something of a moderating influence on things. Bumrah should go well in Eng too; he's young, has speed, good release, and the surprise that comes with encountering an awkward action for the first time. I'd love to see Umesh get a few games but injury aside, I can't see in whose place.

Congrats India for winning the match :clapping:

Congrats Proteas for winning the series :clapping: . Also well done to the person who designed the trophy pretty neat.

I agree what Faf said even though our batting looked terrible on the whole. Our bowling and fielding let us down this match.

It could have been better if Bumrah is given rest for alteast few upcoming ODI's or T20's. Man with his action I am worried about his fitness levels to cope with all three formats. Team Management needs to really take good care of him.

You just know that won't happen. He made his name as a limited overs bowler; it's too much to expect of these ******** to spare him the workload.

One of the great series, played with intensity and verve.

From India's perspective, this could have so easily been their series. Aside from the much vilified dropping of Rahane and Bhuvi, it was absolutely crucial that India batted last in the first two tests. Vijay looked like he had a problem early on but seems to have fixed it by the third test.

From SA's perspective, this was a series where their batting failed to deliver the goods, especially in the middle order. QdK looked all at sea. Faf wasn't that convincing. ABdV was convincing as hell but the resultant confidence of his vaunted strokeplay led to his downfall again and again. He is the best, but needs to apply himself more.

Bhuvi and Bumrah have done spectacularly well, and Kohli has to be given due credit for backing Bumrah. Ashwin scored some useful runs and looked good doing it, therefore will be continue to be a prospect for selection in England as well. Pandya shouldn't be selected if four pacers are played. If Ashwin plays, he plays.

Ngidi is a good find for SA as their pace bowling ranks continue to prosper. Philander back amongst the runs, especially difficult runs. They need to sort out their five bowler strategy since it doesn't work with QdK's current form.

And credit to Ishant Sharma as well. He outperformed my expectations and was an important bowler for India.

More thoughts later.

Ishant has a been a Perfectly Fine Test Bowler since mid-2015 (India's tour of BD)

20 Tests, 47 wickets, average of 30.54 and an economy of 2.74

His worst performance in this time was in Australia, where he took just 3 wickets in 3 Tests, but even then managed an economy of 2.67

Hopefully shastri and Kohli finally put an end to the Rohit experiment now. I think the hate for him has been slightly over the top but he's just an objectively inferior option to all the other middle order batsmen. If you absolutely feel for some reason that you need a 6th batsman, or if someone's injured then sure,go ahead. But if they drop one of Pujara or Rahane to accommodate him again , it'll be a disgrace. Enough's enough. The team has been hurt too much too often to try and fit him in somehow.
I know this sounds reasonable, but I strongly disagree. Dhawan should be the backup batsman. If someone gets injured, KL moves down to number 3.

Yep. Ishant is firmly in the #NotTerrible class. Can't remember the last time he bowled a spell of sustained rubbish like the good old days.

It's not quite what budding fast bowlers set their sights on but life teaches us our place in the scheme of things, doesn't it? If he's happy with where he is and more importantly fits a niche within the lineup, then more power to him and the selectors.

They're both subpar but not entirely useless. Doesn't really make much of a difference which of the two you pick.

Yes, but the impact can be big on team composition. Having a useless Rohit at 5 or 6 is more dangerous than having a subpar Dhawan opening.

Tosses were important in all the matches this series. I couldn't help but feel that this was our best chance to win a series in SA in a long while before it began because their batting does look rather brittle and from that POV itdoes seem like a missed opportunity. Good win and an enthralling series nonetheless, it's not our fault that Saf weren't at the races for this one as much as the first 2 games.

What's annoying about Ishant the Test Bowler and Rohit the ODI Batsman are the endless opportunities they got while rubbish before they became decent, while loads of other talented players were not afforded the same luxury. That's why they get the hate, not any objective lack of skill.

Except Nohit the Test batsman. He just hasn't figured that out yet.

Poor Umesh. Seems that he was only here for travelling. He should be asked to stay with team and should play few one day's instead of Shami or Bumrah. Guy is not that bad one day bowler either.

We all feel sorry for Rahane because a proven failure in the format such as Rohit was selected ahead of him due to pounding an average Lanka side, but ****ing hell even Karun Nair must be a little perplexed by the fact he has been given no chance to redeem himself after a few sluggish tests against Australia.

Great win. I'm positive things could have gone differently series wise if we didn't bat last in the 2nd test but we lost comprehensively and our seriously suspect batting was the culprit of the series loss.

I hope Kohli has learned a lesson in terms of selection.

My biggest takeaway from this game was the amount of mental strength it takes to be a cricketer. Elgar was called all sorts of things in the media despite being on the receiving end of some nasty deliveries and had an entire night to digest it all. To then come out and play like he did and not succumb was truly exceptional.

You also have Kohli, Pujara and Rahane, all three under tremendous stress. Kohli because he's being criticised like never before, Pujara because of the awful runouts and his overseas records and Rahane who had to prove a point. Respect.
