To add to this, hard to single out any one of the top 5 or 6. Vijay has been uncharacteristically loose, Che seems to be in a funny head space and needs to put the blinkers on, Dhawan and Rahul have been too flaky (and, thanks to this weird rotation thingy there's no consensus on which the best opening combo is). And Rohit has been, well, Rohit.
Yeah, just collectively as a unit they're just been really soft. This attack is really good but it's nowhere near unplayable and the Indian batsmen just haven't shown anywhere near enough application as a group. So many ********* dismissals.

Yeah, Kohli getting out yesterday was disappointing. I mean, great ball, but he did play across the line a bit. Was an opportunity to really stamp his greatness credentials if he'd taken us close here. Our batsmen had to hang on through that tough period yesterday, and things would have gradually gotten easier. They couldn't do it.

Kohli's been okay tbh. He's had one good innings out of four - a really good innings, but only one.
1 big hundred in 4 innings is usually what you expect from a world class batsman against a great attack tbh. He's looked mostly untroubled, generally got out to good bowling and has converted one of his starts into a huge ton. He's not been Steve Smith but under most other standards I think it qualifies as very good,so far.

Right, that's what you expect. That makes it a sort of middling series for him IMO.

Exactly, even Smith may not have got a ton in the 4 innings in these low scoring conditions.

In fact, no other batsman has scored a 100 this series, let alone 150+ and he may have got 200 if other batsman hadn't collapsed around him.

No one is going to win/draw a series in unfamiliar conditions on the back of one or two outstanding individuals carrying their team through a series. It's got to be a team effort. You can drag your team to a win at home, away, it's simply not gonna happen.

Right, yeah, I'm just saying that it's weird to be gushing about his series as a whole when he's only had one innings of substance. Same for any other batsman tbh.

And to be fair, the "no other hundreds" thing is a little fortuitous IMO. Markram definitely should have got one, as should have Amla.

Yep. Would be a bit like saying Cook had a very good Ashes.

Yeah, people seem to be under the impression I'm saying he hasn't had a good series. He clearly has had a good series, but not a special one by his standards. He personally would have expected more from himself.

The same performance would have been seen in a better light if a couple of other batsmen had also had middling series and India were level. Now, it's like, why can't this **** score runs in the 2nd innings as well when he had a relatively chaseable score on both occasions? While everyone else is quietly averaging 20 and getting away with it.

Sachin used to get this all the time when we were touring away in the '90s. Like, "Ok, great, he averaged 55 and India still lost, so what was stopping him from averaging 75 and winning it for us?". I guess it's the burden you carry for being the most talented batsman in the team.
