Cricket: Otago Volts bowler Warren Barnes reveals new protective bowling mask - NZ Herald

The contraption is part helmet and part mask, with Barnes' face partially covered, and the crown of his head well protected – an important distinction for the 25-year-old due to his unique follow-through.

Barnes's bowling action sees him follow-through with his head down and eyes off the ball after he has released his delivery, and Otago Volts coach Rob Walter explained that Barnes felt that his action left him vulnerable to a line-drive hitting him on the head.

Walter and Barnes combined to design the headgear, which Barnes had worn once before this afternoon's Twenty20 clash.

If, and it’s a big if considering he’s already had back troubles, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s playing first class cricket by this time next year. He’s a tall kid, apparently still growing too, would probably be in that 130-137 range depending on how his rythem is on the day. He doesn’t swing the ball or anything, from what I’ve seen of him anyway.

The seam release looks quite pure, but he's got that cutty/pushy arm and wrist action, which doesn't help. Maybe a bit of inswing on his yorkers.

Is it fair to say that Stokes was a disappointment in his time with Canterbury? Fired once in six attempts with the bat and was both expensive and non threatening with the ball.

Canterbury would never admit it, but yep. They jettisoned Daniel Sams who had been performing strongly for them before then and then took 4-14 in the Sydney Big Bash derby after being told he wasn't required anymore.

I dunno, I guess I can see why they did it - big name guys like that are never available, and I imagine they got him cheap because he was in the country anyway. He was given clearance to play by England, is presumed innocent...so yeah why not. His bowling is understandable enough, short of match practice and flat wickets after a dry NZ December. Batting he was very disappointing.

Nah he's just an early 20s Christchurch club guy, so I'd lean towards a Cricinfo mistake there.
