***Official*** 3rd Test at the WACA

Congratulations to Australia.

In my lifetime England have won 6 Test Matches down under, and I can only really remember 4 of them. So I guess this shouldn't be too difficult to take, but for whatever reason this doesn't feel like one of the 'great Australian sides' that is so clearly dominant in every aspect that I grew up hearing about in the 90s.

That's what makes this so disappointing. But maybe I'm just deluded and we are crap.

Well, this was always on the cards. I'm really enjoying our bowling attack atm. Just relentlessly good.

I really hope Steve sets his sights on winning overseas now. Considering the preparation the team undertook for India, I hope we'll turn a corner and start trying to win in foreign conditions too

Congrats Australia, its going to be tough for the Proteas next year.

But can someone explain does actual science work differently in England, whats Michael Vaughn on about, that is not a young English side
Probably in terms of international experience.

I still find it amazing they haven't found Strauss' replacement since 2012 and now Cook's time is coming up.

It could be a case of in deep ****. Struggling for 1 opener is tough let alone two as we find out with only Elgar for a while.

It's very important for England that they don't get pumped 5-0 yet again with a couple more embarrassing defeats here. Root and Cook have to score some runs and guys like Woakes, Ali etc. could do with a performance or two.

Hope Broad continues to fail, because it pleases me.

cook is not going to score runs. he has always been shoddy against high quality seam. its a given that everyone struggles against high quality seem but he has always been piss poor against it.

Hugely disappointing defeat culminating in handing the Ashes back so soon into the series rendering Melbourne and Sydney almost irrelevant.

Once the squad was selected I'm not sure we could ask for anything different from a number of them, and I'm not necessarily suggesting there are any obvious better replacements that we've left out (barring the obvious). It's a shame our main hopes with the bat, Cook and Root, have woefully underperformed, Malan has been a pleasant surprise, Vince did what was expected, looked a million dollars at times and gave things away much too easily at other times resulting in a predictable average of around 30 and Stoneman for me has done enough to earn another shot in New Zealand.

The bowling again was fairly predictable, we lack any real variety any real pace which was going to make us look really ineffective when we played on a flat deck without much lateral assistance off the pitch or anything through the air. Moeen also had a shocker. We needed Jimmy to lead and everyone else to follow, sadly that didn't happen. Anderson's 12 wickets at 25 is impressive, he was economical when there was nothing happening and threatening in the right conditions for him at Adelaide.

All that said, credit to the Aussies for never letting England get into a position of real strength at any point and fighting back just when it looked like we might get a bit of momentum and confidence. They outplayed us in every facet. The bowling attack all fired at different times and they do look a high quality unit. Steve Smith showed all the batsmen how to do it, he was patient, disciplined, put any loose stuff away exceptionally well finding the gaps seemingly at will. I'll never enjoy watching him but he is vital to Australia and just knows how to score runs, regularly and in match defining proportions.

He has been alright. I always felt we were stupid when we let him score runs against us in Durban that one tour trying to bounce him out. Since then Philander/Morkel made him his bunny.

vs South Africa : 19 tests 1263 @ 35.08
vs Australia : 33 tests 2200 @ 36.67

The only 2 teams he averages under 40 against.

52 Tests is a lot though.

Even in that record against Australia, he had that one series where he averaged more than 100, it's been slim pickings otherwise. He was also not bad in 2006-07 TBF, when he and Bell resisted for a while in Perth against McGrath/Warne.

McGrath mostly did him though. Pushed it across and nicked him off, then when Cook tried to adjust by moving across a bit more brought the ball back and got him LBW. Harris and Philander used the same trick years later.

He also didn't do well when Amir and Asif looked very good briefly in 2010 before deciding to sell out. The one quality pace attack that he has scored heavily against are NZ.

Still not satisfied, I want Australia to completely demoralise england. Winning three tests is not enough I want more. I know being dead rubbers they will ease off a bit but I hope Smith can keep them focused.

Congrats on winning the Ashes Australia! Thoroughly dominant & ruthless display in the 3 tests to date. As Steve Smith reminded us, they did it in spite of losing every toss.
