I do not understand why they couldn't have just modernised the WACA rather than build some new place? At least it is staying for Shield and smaller internationals though.

There is absolutely no way they could have justified the cost of a modern stadium on the back of cricket alone.

The new stadium will host AFL during winter, which means it can actually be used all year around.
I do not know what that is but it still does not invalidate my point. Invest a bit in new spectators' facilities at the WACA and keep it solely for cricket. It would've cost a fraction of the cost it payed to build that weird looking new place.
