Well yes if you want to talk about something completely separate to what I posted then that's up to you.
Sorry mate thought you were talking about ‘putting up a big first innings score’, losing a couple of early wickets may hinder that.

I said that if Australia bat well for an hour they'll be in an excellent position (more or less). How is this hard to understand?

They’re miles ahead. Did you see how much the ball hooped in the one over with the new rock at night? If Australia puts on another hundred (and they’re favourite to atm) England is acrewed. They blew their chance early today by bowling tripe (and dropping Khawaja and opening the game up).
Not the first time they've wasted the first new ball, either. A repeat performance tomorrow morning and we're toast.

But once again, it looks like a wasted opportunity by guys who should know better.

I can't help but feel that whatever our seamers have done today that the Aussies can and will do the same with 10km/h more on it. It wasn't overly special bowling, it was just trying to hit a good spot at low to mid 130's. If Cummins, Starc and Hazelwood can emulate some sort of similar plan then our batsman are going to piss it at the sight of a bit of pace, as they normally do.

Personally I don’t think that will put us in a very difficult position, it would be a good platform to do so though. Also seems unlikely, imo, that these two will do that.

Why? They're set.

Do you think 4/250 would be a position England would be happy with after 100 overs, tiring bowlers and an aging ball?

If Root had batted and got to 4/200 I don't think Australia would have been happy with that.

Lollapse changes everything of course, but another 150 and a new rock after the dinner break and Nasser will be calling up Joe and saying 'I know how you feel mate'.

Yeah, anything above 250 counts as competitive for me. 300 a good score, 350+ and Australia has one foot in the door.

They’re set but will have to start again tomorrow against the new ball, not sure Handscomb especially is technically right to neutralise the new ball against Broad and Anderson, I may be wrong.

Would England be happy with 250/4? Yes I think they would, certainly wouldn’t suggest that we’d be in an outstanding position to win the game from there but that may be due to our own frailties.

Then England have extremely low standards.

If England had batted first and were 4/250 tomorrow morning with two set batsmen in I would be shitting bricks.

EDIT: Seriously imagine it. England are 4/250, the ball is old, all the bowlers have 20+ overs under their belt and Moeen Ali and, say, Dawid Malan are both approaching 50. That's foot on throat time.

The team won’t have low standards, I personally had pretty low expectations from this tour. I’m not disagreeing we need early wickets tomorrow, be a fascinating opening session.

250/4 with Moeen and Malan set would be a very good platform but I don’t think either of these sides are good enough to think that’s on the verge of match winning.

Maybe more so for the Aussies with their attack.

It's on the verge of matchwinning when you only need a bit over 300 to be well in front. It's not a 400 pitch.

It's not a platform, it's most of the work done. Just need to not collapse and you really should be looking to dominate the game from there.

I'm sure it has been spoken to death.... but it is such a poor decision from Root to put Aus into bat. Shows how little confidence they have, basically a defensive tactic with hope to try bowl the opposition out cheaply on what is a flat wicket, with a ball that tends to lose its ability to swing quickly.

I had hopes for this series and so far England have shown little to be excited about.

Mind you Australia still should have been in an even stronger position, particularly if David Warner had turned up with his head screwed on properly and not donated two wickets.
