Given all advantage away by bowling after winning the toss. This will be remembered like Hussain at Brisbane. Root is thick.

Not really sure how Smith is going to get out here unless he does something really dumb. This pitch is slow, he barely has to play a proper shot to defend these.

Overton has found the way to get Smith tbh but I doubt England are good enough to take advantage.

He's certainly going to have to do it himself - sadly our bowlers look absolutely clueless

No I don’t mean getting the ball to stop and catch in front of the wicket. Varying the pace plus seaming it away and a nick to slip is on for Smith.

The last hour or so, barring a couple of floaty half volleys that we’ve dished up I think we’ve been pretty disciplined there making this partnership generally have to work hard for their runs. Once again though we haven’t looked particularly threatening, certainly think a burst around the wicket and into the ribs to Khawaja after the break is worth persevering with and we’ve just got to be really patient with Smith who hasn’t looked in free flowing form.

Things might get a tad more difficult for the batsmen in this last session, the Aussies haven’t got away from us and hopefully we’ll get a chance to attack and win the day. Maybe I’m being overly optimistic but I don’t think it’s all doom and gloom here.

He looks so much better than Ball did last week. Ugly bugger but looks someone who may have a future already, not phased by playing an ashes test on debut.

Yeah Overton is looking a big improvement on Ball.........but we've still ****ed this up I think. Unless the ball starts swinging under lights in the last session and we get Smith soon......we're in the **** here.

So how horrible a decision is this? Not just based on hindsight. There were some who were saying it could be a bowl first pitch given all the rain.

I'm gonna stand by what I said at the toss........it was brave, high risk/high reward. But in a must win test I think it was justified.....unfortunately we bowled like **** and wasted the new ball.

But I'm not gonna slam Root too hard for the decision, but I will for some of his field placings though.

I don’t blame him for having a crack at it tbh, but then they bowled trash for the first hour. Anderson and Broad have to carry the can for that. Much fuller after the long delay.
