So he's hinting that Maddog is opening in the Shield because Smith wants Maddinson in as opener for the Ashes and Renshaw out?

Cowan's omission really does make a mockery of the SS
Guy should be 3rd batsman chosen, Maddo is not an opener's bum, Hughes is not a 6 and Smith admits that he had a hand in the selection despite hardly having seen the latter bat

Yeah, it's quite sad. It's like the SS has become some sort of laboratory where experiments are conducted by the hierarchy of Australia cricket (e.g Smith pulling NSW player of the year out of the team, or even Starc being pulled out of the NSW attack against his will last year leading up to the Test despite Starc saying he was underdone). Currently, we're ranked 5th in the world, and I think we should for a time get back to being performance-based with our picks. Rather than reaching for gimmicks or hunch selections such as Maddinson for Adelaide last year.

Maxwell has hit 259 runs @ 37 since his test recall, probably deserves to keep his spot considering how long Marsh toiled away with hardly anything to justify it(I guess his bowling is useful but not world beating)
I think the selectors saying 6 is up for grabs to the highest domestic run scorer early in the shield season is a bit of a death knell for Maxwell, cant see him outscoring some of his peers in this setting
still think he's has the guts for international cricket though which I can't say about every domestic stalwart

If Renshaw underperforms in the Shield he could be gone for the Ashes. Especially if others do better

Yeah I'm a little concerned Renshaw could be jettisoned. I don't think his ODD form should matter as he's not great in the format anyway, but he hasn't really established a spot either and I could easily see Australia getting excited by other options.
Warner/Uzi would be a significant concern in some places, might pay off in Australia though.

Uzi should be an absolute lock-in when playing at home unless someone else is making a very good case.
Edit: Should read better, I wouldn't mind him at all playing as opener. I can see Renshaw getting quite exposed more than getting runs.
Been good bowling from Vics, Siddle giving nothing away, not to mention looking much fitter and Boland getting great purchase.

**** that was a disgusting dismissal by Usman. Just waft the bat at a good length wide ball from the leggie, no footwork required. Getting to the pitch of the ball is for chumps.
