That period for the WWE, for the RAW side of things anyway, was pretty turgid.

People pine for the glory days of Evolution, and don't get me wrong Evolution were cool and all and there were some great moments involving them, but people tend to forget that RAW was absolute dross for much of that period, and HHH has to carry the can for the majority of that.

He's going a long way to make up for that these days with the work he has done/is doing with NXT and so on. But fmd during that period the bloke was an absolute ass.

Yeah HHH may not have got to NWO and Hogan levels of direness of "creative control" with his politics but it was near enough. Really hate that aspect of the business

Whatever it takes!!!
See what's worse is how seriously he took himself while no one else he did. He was/is and will always be a good wrestler who can work a great match given the right opponent and circumstances but he ain't anywhere close to being the top face and definitely not the top heel he portrayed himself as anytime during his career, save maybe the late 99 to 2000 run before he tore his quads the first time.

When you really think about it critically there hasn't been a lot of periods in WWE history where their TV was good. Most of the Attitude era was garbage (been going back through it with the B&V&C podcasts, who could ever forget "cahoots") and Ruthless Agression era was actually decent for parts, but that was mostly Smackdown! stuff with Kurt, Eddie, Brock, early Cena, JBL etc. RAW gets hot for a month or two every now and then but tends to fizzle out with terrible booking pretty quickly, especially since going to 3 hours.

Do they? It's generally considered one of the worst periods in Raw's history, isn't it? Smackdown was consistently better and drawing better ratings too. So HHH doesn't even have the old 'It's ok because I was drawing so that justifies everything'. Guy was a complete failure in the role. He was an amazing heel in 99/2000, but it had a lot to do with the fact that he was facing Rock/Austin/Mankind at the time who were all at their peak. After they left he was lame.

Dunno, plenty seem to call it out for what it was, but it was only a few pages back in here where people were basically saying how great Evolution were. Not hard to find similar examples all over the Web.

Evolution kickstarted the careers of Batista and Randy Orton, it's pretty much undeniably great in terms of its impact on wrestling. The downside to it was that beyond its own members I don't think it helped anyone.

The Evolution era was when Raw took the ratings back and never let them go again. I don't think Smackdown took the ratings off of raw at all after 2003, 2004 and 2005 were some of Rawls best years IMO. Smackdown was at its best 2002-2003. I think they fired Heyman after that

Also, from what I recall, Evolution was never really great when they just came on to beat up everyone Trips was facing at RAW. It was only during the Mick Foley storyline that they actually showcased Orton and Batista along with Flair and it was a bit better then. But to me Evolution was always a cheap imitation of the Horsemen. There was the odd segment that was entertaining and it certainly helped with the development of Batista (Orton was meh, he was really always meh except that time he took on the McMahons with Legacy) but really to me, it was never all that.

I ****ing hated Orton more than anyone at the time. The legend killer gimmick was pretty good at getting heat. By 2004 Orton was genuinely quite decent in ring and as smarmy a git as you could ever want to hate.
