On these demerit points, if Stokes decided to purposefully get another one in next test would that mean he misses some one dayers and not an ashes test and is his points score reset to 0 after it? Might be worth doing as would give him a break and ease his workload and mean he not under pressure in ashes about missing a big test.

If we're going to apply that rigorously then we'll run out of players on both sides pretty fast.

The reason this is a "problem" is because those ****ing stump mics are turned on for things which aren't the delivery itself, and hence those following along at home get some juicy language from time to time. Just turn them off after the shot is completed ffs, we don't need to hear that **** and we definitely don't need to be having quality cricketers rubbed out for a game as a result.
Wait, so the problem isn't what was said, it's that it was broadcast to TV viewers?

That's even stupider.

Dare I say it but Ballance may get his place back as he is a bloody good short leg and can scratch his way to 20+ which is quite good for our top order.

May as well bring Bell back by that criteria.

I miss Taylor:(
Not sure Bell could even scratch his way to 20 in a test these days tbh

Taylor's short-leg skills being missed for sure, and to be honest, even though he hadn't done particularly well as a test batsman he'd still be preferable to many of those who we've tried recently

This would be so much easier to take if we'd at least not fielded like clowns.
Yeah, bad fielding makes a bad performance just feel so, so much worse.

Although I'm also getting a bit worried how much less effective than Anderson the rest of our bowling attack seems to be at the moment. If Jimmy gets injured or something we could be in serious trouble.

TRJ back will make a huge difference. Woakes has clearly been selected too early. Mo just had the series of his career tbf, he may never hit those heights again but one poor match here doesn't take that away. Stokes is a 5th bowler so I'm not concerned about him. Broad has been poor for a worryingly extended period of time this summer, he's the only genuine worry when you'd hope he'd be our most important bowler in Australia.

But really this team is so wildly inconsistent from Test to Test, it's difficult to know what to be worried about (beyond the three batting positions) and what will resolve itself in the next match.

Honestly this ****ing team.

Hypothetically a really great fielding side would bowl other teams out really cheaply by snagging everything that is even remotely a catch and by scoring direct hits 100% of the time. One bad call or one shot hit in the air remotely close to a fielder and you're out.

I wonder if we'll ever see what that looks like in real life though.

The only thing that gives England a decent chance of winning from here is the pitch. A good batsman will score a century on this pitch. It has flattened out. Hope Bishoo weaves some magic.

This really isn't going to be close. Being 20/4 is one thing in the first innings; another thing when you're 150 behind in the second.
