Am I looking at the right guy:

Mark Stoneman | England Cricket | Cricket Players and Officials | ESPN Cricinfo

I know its more difficult to open in England, but the guy averages 34.6
He has been better recently that his career average suggests, perhaps most relevantly performing well in the Lions test

Hey, even if he turns out to be another Jennings, we could just adopt the definitely sustainable model of pick the average county batsman who's in form, benefit from their promising start (2 games max) then ditch them and move on to the next.

He may well turn out to be a bust but he is a much faster scorer than Jennings.

Ballance saying he's fit to play despite broken finger. Likely doesn't want to lose his place which is commendable but he shouldn't play unless he's 100% ok.

Going to have to start putting people on ignore - writing people off based on their career average is moronic in the extreme. Stoneman averaged sub 30 in his first few seasons. That's not really relevant to now, he has scored plenty of runs the last 4-5 seasons. There are plenty of batsmen who've succeeded with worst records (Trescothick and Vaughan) and plenty who've failed with better. He's earned a shot, moreso than Ballance who keeps getting out pinned on top of the stumps to full deliveries.

As well as the thickos writing Jennings off based on two Tests where he's copped some great deliveries. Has CW started importing randoms from the Cricinfo comments section?

i dunno why'd you get so angry about people querying the record of stoneman.

in comparison vaughan and trescothick were both 25 when they debuted. most foreign observers will not have heard of stoneman so from a distance, yeah it looks a bit odd to pick a 30 year old averaging 34 at FC level.

he scored 1,000+ each season between 2013-2015 but at an average in the mid 30s each time. only last season did he register at an average over 40.

I made a post a few years back while watching a county game about how Stoneman looked much better at the crease than his record would have you believe and Scaly informed me at the time that playing for Durham could really hurt your batting average at that time due to their home wicket. While he rarely seems to bring this up when he talks about their bowlers ( :p ), I think it's borne out to be true to some degree with Stoneman scoring more runs since moving counties.

He definitely underachieved for a while, but not to the extent that you'd expect by looking at his record, and he's a seriously talented player. I'm backing him to be decent.

Would probably be helpful if stats for players included, say, average for the last 12, 18, and 24 months.

Been good for a while as well hasn't he? Not like he suddenly moved to Surrey and got runs. Would certainly trust him to do better than someone like Jennings who just had one great season. We have had so many failures that it is hard to get hopes up too much, at the same time he does not have to do anything amazing to be considered a success.

I think it's always important to break-down stats for a season for each team as they play on the same pitches. Some more helpful to bowlers and some more helpful to batsman. Once you can determine the general trend (who is taking the wickets & what cost & how many batsmen are scoring runs) for each team you can than bring personal decision of whether the talent is good enough or more importantly who is scoring more impressive runs and wickets.
