Depends what you mean by good, I guess. Tremlett was good, but if you mean good over an extended period then yeah.

Don't think SA will be too displeased about that session. 50 overs for 120 runs is alright. Presumably England will bat the better half of today before SA start the blockathon.

England had all the advantage to really play attacking cricket in this last session. Not sure if this proteas team has the same character, but england is goi g to give us a good chance of saving this.

Sky commentary eh?

I mean I really like Athers, Nasser, Holding don't mind Lloyd, Gower yet we can't escape that it's just an awful thing that Botham and Warne are getting worse if anything.

The way now that the good comms actually just troll them is just getting boring in itself, I get that they have to sit with the ignoramuses and it probably makes them feel better to take the piss, without the morons even getting it, but I find it just as dull as them going on about their nonsense.

I mean classic was Atherton trolling Warne by saying Stokes was the third best bat in the England side, presumably hoping Warne would say he was 2nd, as the Cook hate is palpable. This before tea on the first day. Yet Warne didn't bite, butt they went to the studio and Beefy had obviously been listening and jumped in that Stokes was clearly he second best.

I thought it ridiculous, but I thought maybe I'm being a bit Cook biased. Looked up the stats over a year, Cook though not in his best form comfortably ahead, thought well that doesn't include the 258, so checked 2 years, Cook even further ahead, then you get the small matter of over-all career records, ya know many 1000s of runs more at a hugely greater average. Actually did the same 1 and 2 year thing with Bairstow and Moeen and compared to Stokes they're both beating him over 1, 2 and career average thing too. So even Athers saying he's 3rd best is a bit dubious.

Now if you want to call him the second best cricketer, or the most destructive, I'll go with you, even though I think Broad should be there, but nah on the batsman alone.

Disappointing performance from the proteas so far. All went down hill the moment the chances were missed and no balls bowled on the first day.

KG's suspension is ridiculous, stokes probably heard way worse then that the first time he stepped into a newcastle pub...

England's spinners have the experience of the slope at Lords.

Keshav has been good for us but he needs to step up today and strike. He is accurate and he can spin the ball. But possibly needs to realise the setting up at Lords using the slope is just as vital for a spinner. Should have changed angle to Cook earlier yesterday.

Cook and Bairstow are both comfortably better bats then Stokes.
Easily with Root head and shoulders above that pair. Stokes is easily the most dangerous and a guy who can change the course of a match in a session with Bairstow and Moeen behind him in that regard. Root is just so good he can set games up anyway just by batting naturally so doesn't need to go into silly hitting mode.

Nice argument to have though when you are discussing how good a player is in the side when he is as brutal as Stokes is. Stokes is far superior as a bat than Flintoff was and nobody would have said he was better than 5th or 6th best in the side he was in.

There were plenty no balls in the warm up. Professionalism ? Langeveldt ?
KGs first test in England & hasn't been at his best adjusting to nuances.
JPs drop unacceptable. Markram one should have been taken but unsure of circumstances. Root on 5 & 35 ?
Elgars first test as captain making the wrong call on Broad when he was on 4
KG situation, Vernon getting battered & bruised with the accuracy of Anderson/Broad yet our bowlers haven't really got that variable behaviour.

Heino debut, Theunis 2nd test
Jp averaging 33, Temba 31

First real test series we've gone to England as major under dogs.

While disappointed also understand England are more experience and dynamic with Stokes/Ali in top.7

Getting a draw here will be massive for SAs confidence.

This is not the good old days of Smith, Amla, Kallis, ABdV, Steyn.....so I had hope but did not expect much.

But, I`ve been rather disappointed in Elgar`s captaincy, he seems unsure and following instructions. But as you mention in your first point a lack of professionalism is in place. Lots of mistakes being made. Bowlers bowling from wrong end, no real plans in place. No new ideas. Nothing proactive. Then the added woes of dropped catches and no balls. Like you have said previously feels like something not good amongst back room staff.

I am happy with the selection in general, except for Duminy... he seriously needs to go now. But he will play next match with the loss of Rabada because selection will not allow only 4 players of colour in the team.

But when all is said and done the difference between these 2 teams in this match has been Roots wonderful innings, so I`m not quite as doom and gloom as some others I`ve heard...

Look , there has been major positives without our stars in recen times and Faf has been massive for us but this next 6-8 months was always the acid test.

I think Elgar's captaincy has been ok in his first game and this has been a big step up for him but it has to happen. He has been a leader before. Hopefully in the long run this will be good for him.

Just want to see the bowling attack hit the groove first session now.

If Jp fails 2nd innings I just wonder what they are thinking even with KG situation. A supposed senior player not leading his less experienced players.

Trent Bridge known too swing. Morris/Olivier known to swing the red ball both ways so from SA pov it will be good to see someone new step up again.

Big Vern though. Needs to be fit. Biff by mistake leaked he wasnt really fully fit for this game too but needs to grit it out and step up today as senior bowler he said.
