imo, they already have enough runs for a comfortable win but should still bat for about ~70 more runs to eliminate that 1% chance.
I wouldn't be too sure about that tbh. Even with with 300 on the board I'll give Windies a 20% chance of making it. Pitch is still good for batting.

Is it? cricinfo commentators were saying it's spitting and turning earlier today for the spinners.

There's never a 20% chance on a day 5 pitch when you are chasing 300, especially on one where run scoring has been as hard as this. Good for batting means different things on day 5 compared to day 1.

Its not good enough this from Shafiq, wouldn't want him dropped, but alarming he is so out of form with Younis and Misbah gone and Azam not exactly on fire.

Too many runs I'm afraid. We'll need to bat well and maybe get some help from the weather to save this.

It's a shame because bad fielding and wickets off no balls have cost us a good 50-75 runs there. When you're a side that is trying to compete in spite of a lack of experience these mistakes are unacceptable. I hope Stuart Law can sort it out.

You are right 20% is a bit too much. 10% still though imo. They have a sniff here.

complaining about bad pitches in the West Indies is nothing new but does anyone know why the pitches are like this now?

Lack of investment. Simple as that. It has to change, this pitch has been particularly painful. Against Pakistan of all teams too.

That wicket in the last over showed incredible naivety. Literally one journey down the pitch to prod the surface and waste 30 seconds would have prevented the last over. Yet 2 of our most experienced batsmen didn't have the know how to do what literally every other team would have done.

Still, great catch. The batting and bowling ability of the two teams has been surprisingly evenly matched but the fielding and general cricket know-how of Pakistan is clearly way ahead of ours.

Haha, that is very true. In the five or six overs that they faced I don't think there was one ball lost due to time wasting initiated by them. Not one. Quite odd really. Braithwaite was like a dear in the headlights. His manner was of a man just going through the motions.

Thanks. It's a shame to see because the level of application shown by WI in this series has been impressive. In previous years they've given up quite readily in tough situations but they've really stuck at it this time, and it feels like they've been rewarded with surfaces that do nothing for them.

Oh man this is painful. I don't know how to react. Your mind is at a blank when trying to imagine this team without them. They shouldn't have left at the same time :(

In an ideal world, Younis should have had Dravid's role - in charge of the U19 team and Misbah should have had Andrew Strauss' role - Director of Cricket. But this is Pakistan, the nation that never respected or valued them while they were playing, what can we expect post retirement.

From what I've seen of the Test there's been a real steely determination from the Pakistan team to win this to give their Misbah & Younis the appropriate sendoff.

Perhaps they overdid it with their 1st inns batting by being too stodgy and slow but those 1st inns runs on a pitch like this have proven invaluable.

Will Holder take the risk of moving himself up the order tomorrow and not get wasted again? As demoralising as it would be for Singh to be shifted down the order based on this series Holder looks vastly the better bat.

One other benefit of Holder not batting with the tail; he really struggles to maintain the strike as he seems to really misjudge trying to get a 2 when a single was only on offer.

Is Younis temperamentally suited to a coaching role? Has always come across as a headstrong guy which was probably required to survive in the set up but may not be as useful in a coach.

At least Azhar is becoming a stalwart worthy of the name. Just needs someone to back him up.

Well he is incredible to have around younger/newer guys.

This is coming out more now but the way he has guided the likes of Azhar, Shafiq, Fawad, Shan Masood, Babar Azam. Just listen to them speak about him.

Almost every young Pak batsman played their major innings in a partnership with Younis.

U Akmal scored his maiden hundred on debut with Younis in 2009

Fawad got his 168 on debut batting with Younis

Azhar was about 1 year old in international cricket without that one major knock that would establish him as a Test batsman. Then came the 3rd test against England in 2012, Pakistan bowled out for 99 in the 1st innings. Bats with YK, both get tons, Azhar gets his highest score at that time - 157. Still regards that knock as the key knock of his career which made him the player today.

Shafiq - his ton came in South Africa in the 2nd test, after Pakistan were bowled out for 49 in the 1st test. Again batting with Younis, Shafiq scored his 1st Test ton outside of Asia and established himself at this level.

Shan Masood - probably played the innings of his life, in the greatest chase in the history of Pakistan Test cricket, batting with Younis at Pallekele.

This is a good piece that touches on this

I think YK would be a diamond for young Pakistani batsman. Once we look beyond all the numbers and achievements, brilliant as they are, I think the greatest gift YK and Misbah have given to Pakistan is the culture they changed and are leaving behind - a team ethos built on discipline, hard work, more hard work, hours and hours of training, a new high in fitness standards in Pakistan.

Pakistan has always under performed in Test cricket for precisely these reasons. You had gifted players like Anwar, Inzy, Yousuf, Akhtar who were just plain lazy, and cbf being fit.

If YK can take over the U19 team like Dravid has for India, and start getting the younger players to think about cricket differently, by focusing on disipline, hard work and fitness, he can change an entire generation of future Pakistani batsmen.

Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq are living examples of that.
