They wanted to keep things tight so they'd need to bat less time for the draw.
It's not just been 1 match though! Travis Head became a specialist spinner during the summer while Maxwell was just sitting in the outfield.

There has to be something going on specifically with him

Steve Smith's ODI captaincy is just straight up idiotic though. Remember Zampa?

My initial thoughts were that Maxwell was picked to relieve the quicks but didn't get bowled when they seemed to be handling the workload better than expected. Was really surprised at how zippy Hazlewood looked late on day 3, for example.

But the above makes me wonder whether you have a point. I think Maxwell could have done a job and I too am wondering why he didn't bowl more.

Think it has to go through the burning furnace of hatred before he reaches that conclusion when he does it.

Probably just felt if he wanted offies he had Lyon.

Certainly agree him, Warner, or anyone else who wanted to have a trundle might have been a good option for a '**** gets em' over of two but I get the feeling Smith just wanted to squeeze the scoring as much as possible rather than risk some quick runs for a lucky wicket.

Dharamshala won't be a paradise for fast bowlers. There will be minimal grass I'm sure about that, and the cold dense air may aid swing in first session.

The thought process that leads to rating Head's bowling but not Maxwell's must be one to fathom
Always felt Maxwell's bowling was underrated & undervalued.

White ball cricket, but was superb in the WC final in '15 if IIRC.

I remember hearing some speculation during the ODI series where Head was bowling but not Maxwell that it was because Smith etc wanted to get a look at Head's bowling prior to the India tour, maybe considering him as a support batsman/potential number 6. Whereas Maxwell was a known quantity. Felt vaguely plausible at the time as an explanation for why one was getting a bowl and not the other. For the test situation I think it's genuinely just that Smith prefers to bowl his frontliners to not give away easy runs, especially in India. It certainly did help control the run flow and help force a draw in the third test, though equally it's possible Maxwell would have broken a partnership and potentially created a winning position. Either way I kinda doubt if Head was batting 6 he'd have bowled any more than Maxwell did.
