Australian Domestic Season 2016/17

Midwinter

State Captain
End of the seventh round of the Shield.

The Sandgropers were just to good for the Apple eaters, even without Mackin taking a tenfor

The Vic outplayed the Croweaters at their own game, despite Chad Sayers having another good game

Vic now 2 wins ahead at the top of the table, Tassie are 2 wins below at the foot of the table and you can throw a blanket over the rest

The Bluebaggers and the Bananabenders played out the third draw of the season, Henriques notching up NSW's 2nd double century in 2 games and Neville making a consecutive ton to become the leading century maker this season.

Batting
Vic Harris 551, Dean 510
NSW Henriques 551, Patterson 531
SA Cooper 456, Lehmann 439
Qld Burns 601, Labuschagne 462
WA Turner 524, Cartwright 483
Tas Baily 559, Milenko 374

8 batsmen have crossed the 500 run mark, with Neville,501, being the only one not in their states top 2

Burns had an excellent game in long awaited return to form and is the leading run scorer
Harris has had a couple of quiet games while Dean continues his consistent season

Bailey having another good season but Tas batting woes are shown by Milenko, 22nd overall, being the 2nd highest scorer
Same for SA Cooper and Lehmann 15 & 16 on the list
Turner still leads in the west but Cartwright had a good game to now be second.
Henriques big score take him to to top of NSW, ahead of the consistent Patterson.

Bowling
Vic Holland 38, Tremain 31
NSW Somerville 26, Copeland 17
SA Sayers 46, Richardson 30
Qld George 18, Feldman 15
WA Mackin 33, Moody 17
Tas Stevenson 20, Bird 18

Sayers on track for 50 wickets, good support from Richardson
Holland is having tremendous season leading the Vics, being the leading Spinner and being second overall.
Somerville had a big game bowling 77 overs, with 58 in one innings but is marking his mark on the season already taking more wickets than last year's leading spinner (Fawad 23) and is now 6th overall.

Mackin had a quiet game for him with only 5 wickets, now 3rd overall, while Moody had his best game of the season with 5

Stevenson has finally taken over from Bird as Tassies leading wicket taker.
Qld showing where their weakness is with George being 10th and Feldman 16th on overall lists Feldman hasnt played the last 2 games

Tassie struggling in both batting and bowkling, Qld being weak in bowling.

NSW showing they have trouble bowling sides out

Vic one win away from the final, the same position as last year. They drew the last game to scrape into the final.
Tassie is the only team out of the running.

Next round starts 25th Feb

Bl00s really need Cummo.

Sad to say it but Dougeh! might be near the end. Just not having much impact. Hope he proves me wrong and grabs a bag full next game.

I have noticed Milenko make some quick fire 50s but I definitely did not expect to see him in second spot for Tassie this year. Well done Burns for claiming top spot. I can understand him being away from the Test team at the moment, but I hope he is still in the selectors thoughts.

We never needed two Sydney sides and two Melbourne sides. Should have had Newcastle, Townsville or the Gold Coast instead.

Disagree completely. Townsville for instance has around 200,000 people in it, they are just not going to get the same crowd numbers and don't have a large enough oval to play on as the stadium for every game (would be fine as a one-off game).

Also the Melbourne and Sydney (especially Melbs) has been historically huge and put the BBL on the map in a way that the Gold Coast Maidens vs Townsville Mad Cows would ever do.

Yeah the BBL wouldn't be anywhere near as successful without the 2 Melbourne and 2 Sydney sides.

The Melbourne derbys have been easily the biggest games in Australian cricket the last couple years

I'm fine with two Melbourne sides but don't call them Melbourne - make them Fitzroy and Geelong or something. Or even Melbourne and North Melbourne.

I find it silly to have two sides from the same city.

I actually think that a BBL team on the GC might work despite the fact that virtually other major sporting franchise has died or is on life support

You're definitely entitled to your opinion but I can't see any logic or sense behind it whatsoever tbh

It evidently hasn't been an issue in any meaningful way. A Geelong side instead of one of the Melbourne sides would have been far less successful that what they have now, and I'd wager that even just naming one of the sides differently, eg. "North Melbourne" would have harmed it's success in several ways

They really handled it perfectly from that perspective, just as waiting more than a few seasons of consolidation before considering adding smaller local markets such as Gold Coast or Geelong is 100% the right move.

Yep GC is one of the best options as long as the talent comes from Australia wide (not just predominantly QLD Bulls players). GC in theory suits the Bash. Are drop in pitches allowed at Metricon?

There aren't that many good domestic players without a franchise though, so while I wouldn't mind expansion, it shouldn't be at the expense of quality. I guess an easy way to combat a 10 team comp would be by having 3 overseas players available per team. That way 80 Aussie players minimum compared to 72 currently.

I think the Geelong part would have worked because the population around the area during the school holidays is around 1.5 million. They presented a case for inclusion that far outweighed the Docklands proposal on merit according to plenty of people, until the Docklands people basically said "How much do you want?" and wrote a cheque.
