Embarrassing for the U19s. Beat Sri Lanka handily in all the prior games and lose the final after being bundled out for 79. Mulder playing as a specialist batsman was out first ball.

Very poor. They say the pitches have suited Sri Lanka more than us but we have beaten them 3 times in the round robin stage.

Yet the destroyer in chief was a Sri Lanka quick who ended up taking 17 wickets in the series. South Africa's leading wicket taker was a leggie and Mulder, who despite taking wickets in FC cricket bowled less than 20 overs here. Though Sri Lanka U19s did whitewash England last year in England, so they look pretty strong at the moment in terms of youth cricket.

CSA announced yesterday that there wouldn't be a 7th franchise. I agree with that for FC cricket but if they can get some financial support, an 8 team 20/20 tournament would be good, especially if they can get the Kolpaks back, few West Indies and some English cricketers etc., to make sure the standard is high. Need to make sure that is at the forefront as it would be difficult to get financial backing if teams are hamstrung with regards to who they can select.

Disappointed, not creating a 7th Franchise makes no cricketing sense and development of players in the current situation, probably a monetary issue.

I personally could not be bothered with trying to create a T20 competition bigger than we currently have, we do not have the drive in SA for T20 to create interest like the IPL and BBL does. SA T20 will not get the international viewership required, never mind local viewership.

Been watching some of the Varsity T20 Comp on the go when I get a chance and some decent cricketers. Lots of current semi-pro, former SA u19 or players going or been SA academy and even some franchise contracted.

Nothing really to shout home about. No former SA u19 or players currently in WP senior set up. Suppose the main WP/Cobras players play for the traditional cricket clubs like WPCC, CTCC, Victoria CC eventhough them & UWC are in the 1st league too. Other clubs in first league like Rondebosch, Durbanville, Belville, Altius & Montrose

Believe they being patient with Glover and building his body strength due to injuries because always thought he could make it. Fenito Mehl looks a decent spinner too.

University of Johannesburg

Quite a few former SA u19 players like Ryan Rickelton , Stefan Klopper and Grant Roelofsen with Rickelton/Roloefsen playing for Gauteng. Rickelton & Klopper were superb in the tv game last night. The young quick/all-rounder just out of school Justin Watson looked very decent (hits the ball a mile & hits the wicket hard and gets on to you)

University of Pretoria (SA Champs and World champs now coached by Kruger van Wyk)

Not the best Tuks team with Theunis de Bruyn, Aiden Markram and Lungi Ngidi being recent graduates.

Thomas Kaber and Tony De Zorzi are former SA u19 batsman and play for Northerns. Arguably their seam-attack is the best in the competition with Migael Pretorius & Craig Kirsten in particular supported by former SA u19 Vincent Moore. Pretorius is tall with a high action and good pace (looked very good) and good to see Kirsten come back after all his injuries as he used to be seriously quick but quick enough now.

North West University

Batting heavy with North West players Wihan Lubbe (Lions contracted), Janneman Malan and Marques Ackerman. The last two are former SA u19 players. Leg-spinner Dyllan Matthews is top wicket-taker and the quick Jovaun van Wyngaardt is doing well as well.

No University of Kwa-Zulu-Natal which is tough for the regions young student cricketers but quite a good tournament and platform this for young cricketers to get tv coverage and possibilities of contracts. Lungi Ngidi was playing in this tournament a year ago.

This is the 3rd season now. It was broadcast last season but not sure about the first. Great platform for these guys but now no 7th franchise how do some of these talented players play franchise cricket before they 24/25 ?

I was disappointed when CSA said there would not be an extra franchise... I can only believe it is about money, there does not appear to be any other logical reason for me.

Got to question the reasons. Money the easy excuse. I would stop semi-pro cricket to get a 7th franchise and in turn strengthen club cricket. Suppose they also have no idea who to give it too. Which players from current franchises can they sign & can the new franchise produce their own players strong enough to compete with the other 6 probably is an issue.

I can`t see players being a big issue... like we are discussing their is enough players of quality to easily fill another franchise, local player development could be an issue but honestly players move around so much now days the that will be more a matter of time issue. However money is needed to get all this going, maybe politics of who gets it is also an issue? Interesting idea of getting rid of semi-professional and put more into club cricket, probably will never happen though. I`m not sure how comfortable I would be with distribution of money at club level, provincial/franchise level seems more manageable.

Neil Manthorp explains why Cricket SA’s parochial, nonsensical decision smacks of vested interests

It was quite a week for South African cricket. A number of significant decisions were taken, and we are not talking about AB de Villiers’ laudably attacking instinct to keep the extra fielder in the circle during the middle overs against Sri Lanka at St George’s Park.

Painfully dull as it can be to talk boardroom at a time when the team is playing such compelling cricket, sometimes it cannot be helped because the men and women who made the executive decisions affect the cricketing ones.

Following the Cricket SA board meeting on Saturday, it was announced the existing franchise system of six teams would be retained. Cricket SA had commissioned a review of the domestic cricket structure and the findings had recommended the awarding of a seventh franchise. Cricket SA high-performance manager Corrie van Zyl presented a paper outlining his belief too many quality players are sitting on the sidelines at the existing franchises and that they need to be playing at the highest level to remain incentivised.

He outlined the likely danger that players (of all races) would continue to look elsewhere for employment without sufficient opportunities at home.

Cricket SA, wisely, has a committee specifically established to investigate and debate matters of a particularly nuanced cricketing nature. Van Zyl sits on the committee, as does Proteas opening batsman and Lions captain Stephen Cook. The recommendation from the committee was that at least one more franchise should be established — possibly two. From a cricket perspective, they concluded, they were comfortably sustainable.

Cricket SA CE Haroon Lorgat, a highly qualified and experienced accountant, has often stated a seventh franchise is financially sustainable.

So when the 11 men and one woman who comprise Cricket SA’s board of directors came to discuss the subject, all they really needed was a large rubber stamp. Except they blocked it.

It is the kind of parochial, nonsensical decision Cricket SA were trying to prevent when they wisely appointed five independent directors of the 12.

Cricket SA president Chris Nenzani said: "We will maintain the principle of strength versus strength at the highest level of our domestic game. This has served us well in the past in bringing newcomers through to the various Proteas squads."

No — it has not served SA well and it is not serving us well now.

Your very own experts have said so, Mr Nenzani.

No reasons were given for the decision but word from the boardroom is it was not unanimous and that it was reached, at least partly, by the failure of those with vested interests in the location of the new franchise to compromise.

There may have been a sense of: "If we can’t have it, nobody will."

Of slightly less importance but equal mystery was the decision to announce that coach Russell Domingo’s contract would not be renewed at the end of the England tour in August. On the face of it, fair enough. His contract does expire in August and it will have been four years since his appointment, widely regarded as the "usual" life span of the job. But the thing is, the board gave him a six-month extension at the end of 2016 when his contract first expired.

"Naturally, the performances of the Proteas was a key factor in the board’s unanimous decision," Nenzani said in October. "The recent Test Series win against New Zealand and the impressive 5-0 win in the ODI series against world champions Australia were noted. In addition, the excellent Proteas discipline and positive culture throughout the coaching team, the player leadership group and the rest of the players were viewed as exemplary."

Since then, Domingo has presided over another Test series win against Australia and a whitewash against Sri Lanka.

The discipline and culture have remained just as strong. But this time, Domingo will have to resubmit his CV with anyone else who cares to apply.

Cricket SA are justifiably proud of their governance structures but, just occasionally, it does seem that "due process" is moulded to fit the requirements of the time.

"We reserve the right to reappoint Russell if the board feel that is the right way to go," Nenzani said on Monday.
