S Africa calls for its players to stay

Dean Elgar turns down Kolpak moves but will join Somerset as an overseas player.

Dean Elgar has resisted the temptation to join the exodus from South African cricket with a Kolpak deal and has agreed instead to rejoin Somerset as an overseas player.

Elgar, an opening batsman in the South Africa Test side, is understood to have rejected the opportunity to join other counties as a Kolpak registration and will return to the team he represented in 2013. That means he has committed his future to South Africa as a Test player.

That will come as a huge relief to supporters of South Africa who have recently seen Kyle Abbott (Hampshire), Hardus Viljoen (Derbyshire), Simon Harmer (Essex), Rilee Rossouw (Hampshire) and Stiaan van Zyl (Sussex) sign Kolpak deals which ruled them out of international cricket for the immediate future.

Durham and Yorkshire are both understood to have registered some interest in recruiting Elgar, but Somerset was always his preferred option after he enjoyed his previous stint at the club. He averaged just 24.60 in his brief Championship stint in 2013 (he only had five innings) but is said to have fitted in well in the dressing room.

Somerset are currently understood to be trying to persuade Cricket South Africa to allow Elgar to miss a training camp in late May which would render him unavailable for a couple of games. South Africa play a four-Test series against England in July and August which Elgar will be expected to be involved in.

The ECB is wary of being misled on Kolpak registrations as players express a desire to become English-qualified only later to make an about turn. The ECB has confirmed that the attempt by another South African, Ryan McLaren, wo win a Kolpak deal this time last year with Hampshire was declined on grounds of his vacillating between a Kolpak and overseas registration in the past.
Missed David Wiese off the list of recent Kolpaks.

Interesting how relationships were developed from initial time at the club. Elgar was quite successful at Surrey but less so at Somerset so good to see they valued what he brought as a package before.

Your county is broke and has been relegated for financial irregularities, **** off if you think you're recruiting overseas players.

It is not broke actually. The one good thing to come from it all is the debt was cleared: the ECB debt was written off whereas the debt to Durham County Council was converted into (club) shares.

I seemed to have missed this but if he doesn't qualify I'm not sure this has legs.

De Lange, Glamorgan talks still 'ongoing'

Cape Town - English county Glamorgan have confirmed that talks with South African fast bowler Marchant de Lange regarding a possible Kolpak deal are still "ongoing".

Earlier this month, Knights CEO Johan van Heerden said he was confident that De Lange would not sign a deal to play Kolpak cricket in England.

However, according to Glamorgan Cricket's official website, chief executive Hugh Morris said that they were still negotiating with the South African fast bowler.

"When we do get gaps or our resources are limited, we want to make sure there's as much competition in the side as possible," said Morris.

"We've identified a need for a fast bowler and we're actively speaking to one or two options.

"We've had conversations with Marchant's agents and those are ongoing."

De Lange, 26, has played two Tests, four ODIs and six T20Is for the Proteas - with his last ODI game against England in February last year.

Should De Lange join Glamorgan, he will play alongside fellow South Africans Colin Ingram, Chris Cooke and Jacques Rudolph.

Rossouw signed a R400k contract in the PPL. Looks like he will be giving the 50-over comp for the Knights a skip.

Supposedly Abbott also wanted a gig but got in too late.

S. Cook and Jennings will be opening partners before (probably) playing against each other in the Test series soon after. That will be fun to see.

No real surprise but once again unfortunate.... the FC structure is being truly hurt at the moment.

Very good keeper and much better batsman than he showed at test level. Rossouw is still playing domestically so maybe Vilas will continue to play for the Cobras. Read an interview with Ashwell Prince recently, the new coach of the Cobras and who also played as a Kolpak for Lancashire, and he was hopeful that these guys could still comeback and play, and that South African cricket still needs these guys around.

This call to stay has worked well then.
Being a Kolpak doesn't preclude Vilas playing for the Cobras, he just can't play for SA. And he was unlikely to anyway, QDK will be in the side for the next ten years, and we've got some decent keeper-batsmen coming through apart from Mosehle, guys like Klaasen and Second.
