Can only blame themselves for poor tactics NZ, Wagner should have done more to shield Nicholls from the strike.

Whats up with all the Nicholls haters. He scored 98 , from a losable position to a very good one. Good innings under pressure. Im pretty sure he will score more runs vs sa than Raval, santner or watling.

Well done

Why do the commentators always stroke Nicholls like he's our future middle order rock? Are they just ignoring his technical flaws?? They've already brought up his 70 in SA, as they do in every one of his bats.

BTW, Mr_Mister Fulton and Elliott have been tried and failed years ago, and no longer are decent First Class options (I don't think Elliott even plays it anymore, Fulton has been going down for the last few years). Broom is an option, sort of like Brownlie. Both are far better against pace than Nicholls.

Yes agreed, we needed his runs for sure. It's more the fact he is no long term option in the middle order, and the classic runs against Bangladesh will keep him in the side for a longer run.. Look at his foot movement. Any pace/movement, he's a dead duck.

Because it just wasn't a good innings. He gave multiple half chances & just got freakishly lucky. It was atrocious batting.

There are lots of players with technical flaws that have good test careers. Nicholls deserves his place in the team.

The players who really shouldn't be there for sa series are

CDM
Santner (what is he doing in team ???)

Also huge question marks over raval.

Also when was the last time watling batted well? Apart from that partnership with mccullum vs india watling always goes missing when the going gets tough. His average flatters him.

Surely we need a common sense rule for those situations. He'd grounded his bat ffs
The common sense rule is that if he grounds his foot it's in. If he's dumb enough to take a triple jump over the crease in a tight run then I have no problem with him being given out in a situation like that.

You making some valid points about CDG and some of the others, doesn't make Nicholls less inept at Test level.

I don't know man. Nicholls has looked genuinely terrible in everything barring that South Africa tour. We'll see if that really was an outlier, but he hasn't even performed that well for Canterbury in first-class stuff.

He isn't inept though. It was a good innings despite what you say. He only looked shaky after he got into the 80s. He is doing atleast as well as brownlie did , who seems to be the one people want in.

Let's agree to disagree, this guy ain't up to test standard. I would have thought that was painfully obvious to see.

Yeah, I'm grateful that Nicholls was somehow able to stick around in a couple of tight situations here and in Wellington. He's obviously determined and trying hard but he never looked confident or set. A good batsman shouldn't suddenly look shaky once he reaches 80. I can understand a few nerves in the 90s but jeez, he looked like he'd never batted - or played cricket - before.
