And they should tbh.. At least for the IPL, most people I know go to watch games in which some big name players are playing.

Yes and Taylor has been snubbed by IPL franchises for at least the last 2 seasons, and for very good reason, there's many better options than he both from a marketing and performance perspective.

Thisara Perera, Ian Bell, Tim Bresnan, and James Vince played in this Big Bash. Most of them are hardly selling any tickets are they? Bell and Bresnan are also a poor T20 players.

Ross Taylor is far more marketable in Australia than in India I imagine

Plus the kind of names available to the IPL franchises trump's the BBL.

That article is weird and so is Cricinfo for picking up on it with the slant like Taylor feels hard done by. By the sounds of it, seems like he's enjoying cricket since surgery and he wants to play as much of it as possible, and was disappointed he couldn't. Nothing more.

There have been a few articles floating around NZ media the last few days trying to link Ross being "snubbed" from the T20 side with him still being offside with Hesson and then extrapolating to say that "his time in international cricket must be coming to an end" and basically insinuating that it's 2012 all over again, Hesson is trying to push him out, Ross probably won't stand for it and will/should quit etc

As far as I can tell these stories are based on nothing factual whatsoever other than Ross being dropped and Ross expressing his desire to play (which is a good thing, surely). Our dopey cricket media don't seem to have cottoned on to the fact that Ross has been crap at T20s for years and the decision to drop him and look at some other options against Bangladesh makes pretty decent sense from a purely cricket and performance perspective (and this is coming from someone who would have preferred he was in the team).

Not Terrible
Last year was one of Taylor's best Evers in T20I, he's never been particularly good for NZ in the format, domestically and in the IPL he definitely had some great years though.

He was an absolute gun of a T20 player from maybe 2007-2010ish, had an outstanding overall record in the format and was a bit of a star in the early years of the IPL. His overall T20 game has generally deteriorated (notwithstanding some decent performances last year for NZ in a slightly different role) and this has gone hand in hand with his quite apparent inability to really "switch gears" in ODIs and tests like he used to be able to (and with him becoming an overall better player, FWIW).

I also think the eye thing has had something to do with it- Ross over the last 2-3 years has become less capable of playing the big or outrageous shots, more cautious about his general batsmanship, and more effective overall. It's hard to unpack the chicken-and-egg situation with his change of approach and his "eye" (and whether his "eye" has actually deteriorated in the typical sense or whether it's all down to a specific medical issue). I honestly wouldn't be entirely surprised if fixing the eye issue has revitalised him as a T20 player and as a "hitter" in general, hence I would've liked to see him in the internationals.

I mean I agree, but he still never really did anything for NZ in internationals.

I think there's also that fact that he was always awkward to place in the batting order. IIRC there was quite a few instances with the Baz-Gup-Kane top order Ross would get shuffled with power hitters coming in ahead of him to try and capitalise on a good start or recover things. Hopefully now he might have more of a secure run at 3 and prove his worth there.

Well....I agree too, that's pretty much what I was saying in my original post, I thought you were sort of gently disagreeing with me by suggesting he had improved in T20I and maybe there weren't valid reasons to drop him.

This wasn't a problem when Ross himself was basically the alpha-hitter in the team though. Perhaps I am taking too much from a relatively short period of his career but my recollection is that 2007-2010 Taylor was basically THE HITTER in NZ cricket. It was simply that he didn't perform in the sprinkling of T20Is we played. Then later he lost his ability to not play like a proper batsman and just became kinda crappy at T20.

Yup, bang on. I was reading McCullum's T20 book from around 2010-11 the other day, & in it he was gushing over Taylor's attacking ability in T20s & at that time predicted if anyone will match Yuvraj Singh's and Gibb's record of 6 sixes in an over it would be Ross Taylor. That's probably what we all felt around that time.

Taylor always had modest T20I numbers, but I do think that was more coincidence than anything else, since in those early IPL days he was one of the better bats around against very strong T20 attacks, and yes he was our 'hitter'.

Yes, I remember when they had a super over finish against the Windies in 2008/09 NZ sent out Oram & Taylor. Today I guess they'd send out Guptill & Munro.

Yup.

12 tests, a batting average of 12 (HS 45) and bowling average of 64 (BBI 4/37), Khaled Mahmud is arguably the least talented Test captain of all time.

Absolute legend tho.
Wasn't Khaled MoM in the 1999 WC win over the Pakistanis? That one performance should have rescued him from.obscurity considering the win led to Bangladesh getting test status.

Yup. Not only that, his best ever test performance came in the nearly-win against Pakistan in Multan, where Inzy saved them.

He was such a legend. We should be giving him the nickname 'AB' instead.

Storm heading to Wellington tomorrow, don't think there will be play. We've had a rubbish start to summer, however the rest of the week is looking dry enough for a result.

*May have spoken to soon, it's windy AF, no rain around yet (9am). Could be a session or 2 in terrible conditions for cricket haha!

Yeah. I reckon we will get a start, but rain will arrive before lunch. The wind is pretty awful already though, so bowling won't be much fun no matter what colour the pitch is.

They'll probably get a start in today. Not raining yet.

But by god is it windy. Absolutely ghastly,
