30 Test hundreds

What do people think re: Hameed and Renshaw? Obviously too early, but I think they have the potential to get to 30 tons at least. Both look like real players, open the batting (so have the most chances to score tons) are still very young and assuming they don't regress should play lots of Tests. On the other hand, Phil Hughes was in a similar boat at the same age, so anything can happen.

As for the bigger names, only really the Big 4 and Warner (who's on 18 now btw) have a real shot. Smith should get there easily, he's already more than halfway there, Australia play plenty of Tests and has shown that his batting doesn't significantly regress with captaincy, although I do worry his game is one that won't hold up well with age. Kohli, he's also got a good shot but you never know. Root, the worry with him is that his conversion rate has not shown any signs of improving and he also apparently has back issues. We don't know what sort of effect captaincy will have on his batting. (On the plus side, England tend to play the most Tests out of any nation) Williamson, I think he's lost form at the wrong time and won't play as much as the other three. On the other hand, that might mean that he goes deeper into his thirties than others, and I think his game will hold up better than Smith or Kohli as he ages anyway.

As for Warner, he could get there but like Smith I worry his game won't hold up well with age and he's older so probably needs to get to like 25 by 15 months time which is a stretch. Pujara, probably too far behind unless he goes on a crazy run or improves his away form.

One other guy I'll throw up is Kraigg Brathwaite. Only on 5 but only just turned 24, doesn't play T20 and probably shouldn't be playing ODI's (so won't suffer as much burnout or become a T20 specialist), and opens the batting so he could have a good shot especially if he starts to really kick on from his exploits in Dubai. Wouldn't bet on it though, especially given how much of a ****up is the WICB.

Literally wait for them to play more than 5 Tests before talking about them, come on.

If he gets to 100 tests he will be in with a shot. Will inevitably move up the order when they go through a bad patch...

There is always a chance of DeKock giving up the gloves and playing as a top order bat @ 4

I think Warner will end in the mid 20s somewhere. He's a gun but he's a gun that relies entirely on his eye. Just like Ponting/Viv/G Chappell he'll fall off a cliff at test level and simply stop making runs at one point.

RIP Phil Hughes. Almost certainly would have got there if he was still with us.

Younis has 33 now. Funny that even back in 2011 he was being written off. Story of his career I guess.
Younis Khan was in a ridiculously good run of form when I made that post, so I'm guessing I didn't write him off as such, I just thought he would retire soon and not play to 40.

Where's that long term bet thread, some of the predictions being made about de Kock are absolutely mental.

No idea what Greg Chappell you were watching.

He was before my time. I'm probably mixing him up with someone else. Was under the impression his batting rapidly declined towards the end.

Replace Chappell with Gilchrist and you get my point.

SA have had the services of a few bonafide greats over the years and when the quality drops with a few retirements, they might select another keeper and promote him higher up the order as a specialist bat. I would be surprised if he doesn't get 20-25 test hundreds at least.

There is absolutely zero chance, even if de Kock turns out to be prolific as Sangakkara or Hayden, that de Kock is getting 25+ hundreds batting at 6 or 7.
Yeah, he'll have to move up the order, not an unlikely possibility though when Amla, de Villiers and Duminy retire.

Yeah that's very possible. But it's hardly guaranteed.

And even then, as good as he is, 25+ is tough. ABdV only has 21.

Should also be pointed out that it's worth waiting a few years to see if he keeps it up before nailing him on for virtual ATG keeper-batsman status (which is what 15-20 hundreds would give him, let's not lie). Remember when Matt Prior was going to be the next Gilchrist?
