It has to happen. But there is talk for the T20 Comp... it is more vital for our test and ODI cricket.

Bumper summer next season with 10 tests including 4 test series v Australia/India and that comes after the tour to England. Lots of cricket coming up and hopefully issues would have been resolved by then to get at least an extra professional team in to compete for SA selection.

Paul Adams will step down as Cape Cobras coach from January 1 to be redeployed as Western Cape Cricket high performance manager and coach. This follows a prolonged period of player unhappiness with Adams, who has been in charge for five seasons and won five trophies but faced several mutinies this season.

Cobras have not announced Adams' successor but have on their staff Faiek Davids and former international batsman Ashwell Prince, who are likely to come into contention to take over. Being mid-season, they will need to find a solution soon because their next fixture is a first-class match starting January 5.

Adams' troubles with the players began at the end of last season when several senior Cobras players complained to the management about what they believed was a lack of tactical acumen on Adams' part. Adams had the backing of the Western Cape Cricket (WCC) Board, though, and the concerns were ignored. Instead, Adams underwent management courses over the winter but returned to work to find the players still unhappy. They filed a formal grievance on May 10, after learning that Adams had been offered a contract extension.

The WCC then agreed to an internal mediation under Paddy Upton but rejected his report for what they termed "material deficiencies," as he had failed to interview all the contracted players. The South African Cricketers' Association then became involved in assisting the players in dealing with the issue.

The SACA confirmed that 10 out of the 17 contracted players wanted Adams removed and helped them take the matter to the country's dispute resolution body, the Council for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), where the players applied for the right to strike should Adams not be removed. The CCMA granted them that right but they did not act on it. It appears as though their demands have now been met and neither party showed ill-feeling.

"Helping the team to succeed in ways which led to a number of trophies and getting players going up to the Proteas was a very satisfying part of my five-season journey as Cobras' coach," Adams said. "I am looking forward very much to my new role."

The new year will begin with Cobras searching for consistency after starting the season with three defeats in the first-class competition to lie at the bottom of the table halfway through the tournament. They fared slightly better in the T20 format and were in contention for a playoff place but failed to qualify. They have also sent two senior players on loan to other franchises - first-class captain Omphile Ramela to Lions for part of the T20 competition and offspinner Dane Piedt to Titans. There was no indication if either would be back under a new coach.

Ashwell Prince is the new Cobras caretaker coach and Dane Piedt is the new Cobras captain with Ramela (4-day) & Ontong (limited overs) losing their roles as captains.

The Buildnat Cape Cobras have appointed the former South African batting icon Ashwell Prince as caretaker head coach until the end of the 2016/2017 campaign with immediate effect, while Faiek Davids will be his assistant coach.

Prince’s first match in charge of the Cobras will be in the Sunfoil Series clash against the bizhub Highveld Lions at the Recreation Ground in Oudtshoorn starting on January 5.

Paul Adams, who has been at the helm as coach since June 2012, has been appointed as high performance manager of the Cape Cobras.

The WCC board also approved the appointment of the South African offspinner Dane Piedt as interim captain of the Cobras for the rest of the 2016-/2017 season.

“Paul’s new role is pivotal, as he will be the caretaker and manager of the pipeline structures, nurturing the next generation of franchise players,” said Nabeal Dien, chief executive officer of Western Cape Cricket (WCC).

“We have opted to make these significant changes in order to address the current slide in the form of the Cape Cobras,” added Dien.

“We trust that the appointment of Dane will ignite the Cobras. He is a selfless cricketer with an excellent game awareness and a natural motivator, and we believe he will be inspirational,” Dien explained.

“Last season was the first one in eight seasons in which we had an empty trophy cabinet. This season, we have lost three of our first five Sunfoil Series matches and we are hovering at the basement of the log in the Sunfoil Series.

“In the CSA T20 Challenge we could not reach the play-offs after winning the domestic T20 showpiece in December 2014 and reaching the semifinal last season,” said Dien.

“We believe that Ashwell possesses the international pedigree, the management skills and the interpersonal prowess to rejuvenate the Cobras.

"We firmly trust he can restore their pride and lift them to the summit of the logs in the Sunfoil Series and the Momentum One-Day Cup,” Dien said.

“He is not only a veteran of 66 tests for South Africa, striking 11 centuries, but was also a trophy-winning captain of the Cape Cobras. Ashwell was also part of a record partnership of 501 for Lancashire during his distinguished career,” said Dien.

“The ultimate challenge for any coach is to instil confidence in each player and to inspire them to perform at the peak of their collective powers while operating as a close-knit unit.

“Prince displayed the traits that are required as a leader while wearing the captain’s armband for the Cobras, and was also a national captain in the absence of Graeme Smith,” said Dien.

“The Board of WCC have pursued all avenues available to us in order to ensure that the best interests of the Cape Cobras’ cricketing family were served in the current season.

“The performances by the Cape Cobras have been well below the standards set by the WCC Board.

“The immediate mandate of Ashwell and Faiek is to establish a match-winning unit that consistently challenges for trophies and to return the Buildnat Cape Cobras to the status as South Africa’s top franchise and the premier conveyor belt of international players,” Dien said.

“As a board we are confident that Ashwell as head coach, and Faiek as assistant coach, will establish a culture of success and that consistent wins will become habitual again,” Dien remarked.

Beresford Williams, chairperson of the WCC Board, said: “It is the start of a new dawn, but we want to thank Paul for his service as coach to the Cobras during a period of South African domestic cricket domination.

"When he initially emerged as a Western Province, and later international cricketer, he inoculated cricket with his flair and dynamism and as a coach he left his imprint not only on the Cobras, but also on the emergence of young international cricketers like Stiaan van Zyl, Dane Piedt and Beuran Hendricks.

"We believe Ashwell has the persona, the credentials and the determination to inspire the Cobras to new heights, with the astute assistance of a man known for his indomitable spirit, Faiek Davids.”

Ebrahim (Barney) Mohammed, who boasts a wealth of experience at all levels and represented Western Province and Transvaal in the South African Cricket Board era, has been appointed as convener of the Cape Cobras’ selection committee.

Playing as a cohesive, committed family and inspiring each player to perform at the peak of his considerable power to propel the Buildnat Cape Cobras back to the top, is part of his mission for the rest of the season, said Dane Piedt, newly appointed interim skipper of the Cobras.

A captain’s armband is not a completely novel concept to Piedt.

The 26-year old player was a former leader of the first team of SACS in his final two years at school.

He was the skipper for Western Province on the odd occasion.

“I have also been experienced captains and have learned much from them,” said Piedt, who has captured 265 wickets in 75 first-class games.

Piedt said it is important to understand different personalities and what drives them or motivates them. That awareness is vital if you want to get the best out of each player.

His ultimate goal is to inspire each player to his best and to get the Cobras to perform as a cohesive unit.

“When we performed as one family, we have been so successful in the past against teams,” he said.

“It is difficult to assess what happened at the start of the season. We did not hit the ground running. We did not have a blueprint of what we want to achieve.

“I hope I will bring a new energy to the team. It is not about playing for personal goals, but performing as a team,” Piedt said.

“Our focus would not be on the next game, but on the next session. I will demand certain things from players in certain phases of the game. Maybe it is just about Stiaan van Zyl and Andrew Puttick defending well in a crucial period of 10 overs when the ball is reverse-swinging,” he said.

Piedt has identified an open door policy and honesty as key ingredients of his captaincy. He would be open with the players, he said.

The off-spinner is known for his positive mind-set and attacking nature.

Even when a career-threatening shoulder injury had him on the sidelines, the self-belief is evident that he could return to the summit again.

He achieved that goal and successfully represented South Africa in 2015 and 2016 again.

Piedt has a different challenge right now, and that is to power the Buildnat Cape Cobras back to the top.

If his dogged determination to overcome that shoulder injury is a sign of what is to come, Cobras fans can expect a committed effort by the Cobras when the first Sunfoil Series clash of 2017 starts at the Recreation Ground in Oudtshoorn on 5th January against the bizhub Highveld Lions.

I've always wondered what the situation is with Tahor and being included as a POC? Because according to law, a person of colour can only benefit from BEE laws, employment equity etc. if they are South Africans, or became citizens before 27 April 1994. Which Tahir didn't.

Edit: We are the only country in the world where written into our constitution it is legal to discriminate on skin colour. And this is for the group that is 80% of the population.

At my old work my boss refused to fill in a form requiring him to say what race his staff were. He said he was never asked to do that under apartheid and wasn't going to do that in a democratic South Africa.
