International Coach
SA SCHOOLS TEAM 2016

1. Matthew BREETZKE (18) Grey PE (EASTERN PROVINCE)
2. Christopher SCHREUDER (17) Grey Bloem (FREE STATE)
3. Raynard VAN TONDER (18) Grey Bloem (FREE STATE)
4. Wiaan MULDER (18) St Stithians (GAUTENG)
5. Jesse CHRISTENSEN (18) Rondebosch (WESTERN PROVINCE)
6. Ruan DE SWARDT (18) Affies (NORTHERNS)
7. Sinethemba QESHILE (17) (wk) Hudson Park (BORDER)
8. Jade DE KLERK (17) Woodridge (EASTERN PROVINCE)
9. Michael COHEN (18) Reddam House (WESTERN PROVINCE)
10. Lutho SIPAMLA (18) Grey PE (EASTERN PROVINCE)
11. Akhona MNYAKA (17) Hudson Park (BORDER)

12 Keenan SMITH (17) Daniel Pienaar (EASTERN PROVINCE)

* Wiaan Mulder is the 4th St Stithians SA Schools captain since 1940 and the most famous previously was former Transvaal/Kent star Roy Pienaar. Obviously Mulder is franhcise contracted.
** Think the strength lies in the batting. Breetzke, Schreuder, van Tonder, Mulder is runs.
***De Klerk is a good spinning all-rounder (leg-breaks) and Sipamla is well thought of as a seamer.
**** De Swardt is pursuing a rugby career as has a contract with Blue Bulls as he also made the SA Schools rugby team.

The SA U19 team will be picked early Jan after Cubs week in Stellenbosch where afterwards there will be a tri-series involving Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. Quite a few have already played for the SA u19s but I think the crucial thing is that bar Mulder, De Swardt, Cohen and Sipamla they are all still eligible for the 2018 u19 CWC in New Zealand.

Also noted in the Cubs week squads a certain Thando Ntini made the SA u17 side which is Makhaya's son.

That batting looks very strong. Of the fast bowlers is there anyone with genuine pace?
I've only seen Lutho Sipamla and Wiaan Mulder bowl. They can get into 130s to about 135 and will definitely get stronger and can bowl quicker. Not sure on Cohen and Mnyaka but I think they are left-armers.

Lutho Sipamla

Talking about the speed of the bowlers. On 4:50 you see 16 year-old Gerald Coetzee who made the SA Colts side & on 5:00 just have a look at that wicket cart-wheeling. He was clocked at 141kph earlier this year and only 15 they say he was the quickest schoolboy bowler at the week.

Another young SA u19 fast bowler making strides.

Jeez that's great to see We still producing fast bowlers with gas. If only we could get a left armer with a bit more quality.

Definitely.

Cubs week has been an important part of the pipeline in recent years. Ray Jennings was behind bringing it in to help with SA Selection whereas in the past it was just Nuffield/Coke Week where selection was based.

Franchise performers that have played Cubs week.

Always like to look at the u15 cricket week as they feed into the school first XI's and they actually used to have u15 WC's too. Remember Jonathan Trott and Andrew Puttick played in the one for SA.

These guys will be the majority of the 2020 U19 cwc hosted by SA.

Mainly batsman at this age standout.

Ruan TERBLANCHE (15) (Boland)
Wald TRUTER (15) (Northerns)
Jonathan BIRD (15) (WP)
Heinrich PIETERSE (14) Gauteng
Marco DE KOCK (15) - Free State

* Those 5 stood out like sore thumbs.

Two all-rounder spinners :

Guy SHEENA (15) - WP
Michael FROST (15) - KZN Inland

Seamer all-rounder

Michael BOOTH (15) - KZN Inland

The interesting thing though is that both Booth and Frost come from Zimbabwe and are at boarding school at Hilton College. Both broke records for St Johns and I see Zimbabwe have called them up for u15/u17/u19 junior cricket camps so I don't know what happened.

Yeah I can see there's talent coming through. But I'm betting a fair number will give it all up for studies.
True.

Cricket is a tough sport to get an opportunity for many reasons and with regards to numbers breaking through you have less injuries than in most sports and it's only 11 per match and no subs.

I guess that is my concern with only 6 teams in that it is difficult to give young talent the opportunity. Talk is SWD could become a 7th franchise team.

Majority of the amateur provincial players combine studies and their cricket.
