Don't think it was so much about the spin for Kumble either, which helped. Just a bloody smart bowler.
Different prospect too, used bounce as much as he used turn, could keep it tight and was always at the batsman, he'd have had a ton more wickets in the DRS era (as would have Tufnell/Vettori)

Hm, wouldn't say it's quite the same. I think you'll find lots more overseas spinners doing comparatively decently in the SC. Australia's just a graveyard unless you're a wrist spinner. Unless you spin it big, you go to Australia to due.
Yea I do think the sub-con, and even other parts of the world, are more forgiving to finger spin than Australia.

Hard, firm pitches are a finger spinners nightmare generally. Unless you're like a Lyon and can work angles, flight and get bounce.

Especially against the sides he had to play. I'd argue 2001/2002 Vettori would find bowling in Australia against this team a much easier prospect.
Would have been interesting to see Vettori with DRS and a more potent offie that he had in the early part of his career.

EDIT: beaten to it.

Ashton Turner - isn't he the guy that inexplicably gets amazing drift but no turn? Like he puts enough rotation on the ball to get it to do what Warne used to do in the air, but it hits the pitch and does nothing.

Agree absolutely, although I think Tufnell would have been the pick of the left armers had he had DRS, the guy hit so many batsmen on the pads infront, but never got the nod from the umpires - now-a-days he'd take a bagful of LBWs.

He's not, but if we want a spin bowling batting all rounder for the next 5 tests he's our best option unless they want to take a point on Agar/Turner
Can't wait for the puns in the commentary box from Shastri and co.

would also have changed the way people played him though, if they had a higher chance of getting lbw when coming forward and padding up they'd just stop doing it

Opens up the first slip catch more often though, when you turn it.

That's why latter day Vettori wasn't going to be much more effective, because guys were quite comfortable playing in front of their pad to defend him, taking LBW out of the equation after they got themselves in.

Australia's best hope against India is not to fall into the trap that England did and pick a bunch of meaningless spinners from the ghosts of Christmas past..

Ultimately if they're going to win in India, it comes down to whether or not their pace bowlers can do early damage, not if their spinners can get Kohli out - Kohli will spank every single Australian spinner you've got for the sheer fun of it. If anything they need to pick a work horse who can keep it tight (i.e Siddle if he's rested and repaired) and work on tying India down.

Bowling sub-standard spinners in India is like trying to stand and trade with Mike Tyson.

Sorry what am I missing with Maxwell? Is he really a genuine test spinner? The guy has 56 FC wickets in 46 matches & it's not like he's been setting the world on fire with his FC batting either... averaging south of 40 at FC level.
No, not a Test spinner. If he wasn't so good at shorter forms, I think a lot of people feel he could have established a FC record good enough batting-wise to be pushing for selection, but he's only played half a season for most of the past few seasons because of international cricket.

EDIT: It's basically picking Maddinson with the bat, and a part time spinner with the ball.

Maybe, but that also brings the edge into play a lot more for the left armer spinning it away, Tufnell in his pomp was a master of flight, got the ball to turn when there was turn and could really dip it - Vettori had similar characteristics but no where near the mastery of flight, so I think he would have tied them up, where as Tufnell if they're forced to use the bat more often would've taken a lot more bat pad/slip chances too.

Edit: Beaten by Vic Orthodox this time.

If you're going for match impact, Starc on the final day was the reason Australia won the test, his 84 came quickly and put them in the position to have a fair crack at the Pakistani's and he bowled like a demon to win the match.
If you're going for best individual performance, undoubtedly it's Azhar Ali.
If you're going for "We're ****ing wanky Ch 9 Commentators and believe that Smith is Baby Jesus" - then apparently you go Smith.

Oh yeah forgot about Starc's batting contribution as well on day 5. I remember him smashing a few runs against India on our last tour as well. He averages 25 with 8 50s, pretty handy.

Yea I've called for his banning loads.

He's 'technically' not breaking any rules, so he gets away.

Just don't engage with him like these ****s like Spark and Burgey are doing. He might eventually get bored talking to himself and leave.
Can I adopt this approach with you from now on as well?
