Team of the Year 2016

Surely they can do a skype convo on 30th december or whatever and just pick an XI for the year. Then have the awards in 2017.

Honestly they could just outsource the job to CW and there would be a better XI up a day after the final 2016 test match.

I will say though the ICC's idea of a cricket year is bonkers stupid.
Why? Late September is basically the end of one season and the start of the next. Better than 1st of January which is usually in the middle of an Australian/New Zealand/South African series.

Cook was not even captain of the year when he was winning series and being fairly decent with his captaincy. A dog's dinner of an Indian series and he is captain of the year.

Cook hasn't actually won 'Captain of the year', has he? Isn't it that he's been selected for the team as an opening bat (rightly so imo, as the period covers his excellent tour of the UAE, his ultimately very good home summer and not his poor tours of Bangladesh and India) and then made captain as out of the two plausible candidates (himself & KW), he's by far the more experienced captain and I'm not sure people especially rate KW's captaincy either?

I'd rather have Herath, Williamson or Root as captain to be honest. This team will choke through conservative declarations, dodgy field placings and perplexing bowling changes.

Fair enough, though from the perspective of the people compiling the team I'd argue that they couldn't choose Root (or anyone else who hadn't been captain, which would rule out Herath with the cut-off date they used) and I think Cook's W/L ratio was much better than KW's in the period which I'm pretty sure was the basis they would have been using.

So basically, I'm with you in that I wouldn't want Cook but I can see how they may well have made the decision and I don't think it's the worst ever.

The main problem with the team imo is that, as others have pointed out, it's been published 3 months after the period in question ended. Had it been published in early/mid October, we'd probably all be going yeah, fair enough (captaincy probably still a point of contention, though).

Dunno why Smith didn't make the team, really

The period of September to September is odd. The reason I say this is because unlike European football leagues and in fairness, pretty much most sporting leagues around the world, there is no proper season for cricket. The official start of the English season is about March, for the Asian sides...i don't even know, it starts when ever they have an international to play and for Australia/SA/NZ it is the English winter, their summer. So why pick an arbitrary period, which is what September becomes.

Just having a full calendar year makes more sense and just by looking at the ICC, even their not convinced by the September date as the awards used to take in August at one stage too.

For all the stick FIFA have received recently, they really are a better model when it comes to scheduling things properly. The ICC is just way too hap hazardous.

Anyway that's my little rant on how the awards should be organised, although it wouldn't make much of a difference on picking Ashwin as player of the year but it would provide a better view of who has been a better batsman in 2016, and that's Kohli > Williamson. Cook also wouldn't get put in as captain.

Plus, like I said, Sep to Sep or Aug to Aug as it used to be is just arbitrary. Better to keep it a singular calendar date.

September is probably about as close to a 'close season' in cricket that you can get.

It's just strange that they choose to name the team in December.

No it's not. Every team has varying international seasons, there's nothing "close" about it. It would just make sense and be fair for all side if the ICC took into account a calendar year. It's as simple as that.

September is just as arbitrary as the ICCs previous date of August.

Where the hell is the ICCs structure? lol

Lets be honest here, even if the English summer is generally a non-event, it should encompass the summers of that year for Australia and England.

Who said anything about January, go from November to November.

Calendar year shouldn't end at the climax of the worst domestic system currently running, just not cricket.
