Team of the Year 2016

Cook hasn't actually won 'Captain of the year', has he? Isn't it that he's been selected for the team as an opening bat (rightly so imo, as the period covers his excellent tour of the UAE, his ultimately very good home summer and not his poor tours of Bangladesh and India) and then made captain as out of the two plausible candidates (himself & KW), he's by far the more experienced captain and I'm not sure people especially rate KW's captaincy either?
Please delete this rational post and replace it with something more inline with usual team of year discourse.

Lets be honest here, even if the English summer is generally a non-event, it should encompass the summers of that year for Australia and England.

Who said anything about January, go from November to November.

Calendar year shouldn't end at the climax of the worst domestic system currently running, just not cricket.
Doesn't Aus domestic start early in October? It's literally at the start of the Southern Hemisphere season.

I'm probably giving this too much attention...

Ballon D'or being in the middle of the European season is literally the worst thing about football (yes, worse than Fifa giving Qatar the world cup) I'm very thankful the ICC don't do similar nonsense.

What, the county championship? The county championship is brilliant. Easily my favourite cricket.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Fair enough, though from the perspective of the people compiling the team I'd argue that they couldn't choose Root (or anyone else who hadn't been captain, which would rule out Herath with the cut-off date they used) and I think Cook's W/L ratio was much better than KW's in the period which I'm pretty sure was the basis they would have been using.

So basically, I'm with you in that I wouldn't want Cook but I can see how they may well have made the decision and I don't think it's the worst ever.

The main problem with the team imo is that, as others have pointed out, it's been published 3 months after the period in question ended. Had it been published in early/mid October, we'd probably all be going yeah, fair enough (captaincy probably still a point of contention, though).

Dunno why Smith didn't make the team, really
Bashed two minnows at home and averaged a respectable 40 in tough conditions. Not good enough tbh

Leaving Smith out of the team has to be a cruel joke surely? He's the best batsman in the world bar none. Bloke averages 40+ vs and in every country. Only Greg Chappell and Tendulkar can claim that(and Bradman ofc!). An absolute beast of a batsman with no holes in his record, which makes him better than Root, Kohli and Williamson. Averages close to 60. Incredible.

Heh, calender year ftw.

for those too lazy:

Azhar Ali
Root
Smith
Kohli
Stokes
Bairstow
QdK
Ashwin
Herath
Starc
Rabada

Can't find much fault with that tbh, I don't think Root will have too many issues opening the batting and he's better than the alternatives. Two spinners may be excessive, I'd probably have gone with Haze or Broad over Herath and batted Stokes below Bairstow.

i feel that's still a little "let's force the fab four"-y

like root has played better than most openers but imo you still put two proper openers considering root hasn't actually opened

Has a 200 opening iirc

As well as a bunch of single digit scores.

It is hard to fit all the Fab 4 in tho. I'd probably leave out Kane for this year. Openers, 3 of the fab 4, Stokes, Keeper, Ashwin, 3 bowlers.

done over by not bothering to explain my point fully again sorry

he hasn't actually opened this year**** (he might have one game or something idk but not enough to put him as an opener without cheating)

but again this is the 2016 team of the year, and you can't put him as the second best opener of the year

can't pick on rep if you're taking your arbitrary teams of the year seriously

good god Shady Slim has been destroyed like Joe Root was destroyed in Australia in 13/14

I do love the ICC realising Smith wasn't worth inclusion in their team of the year, although including Voges is a bit of a laugh.

Easiest way to do a Team of the Year is structure it so they can be picked this way

1. Top Order ( 1 - 3)
2. Middle Order ( 3 - 6)
3. Wicket Keeper
4. All Rounder
5. Bowlers

In that case

1. Warner
2. Cook
3. Williamson
4. Root
5. Kohli
6. Stokes
7. De Kock
8. Ashwin
9. Philander
10. Starc
11. Abbott
12. Jadeja
