There's only so far you can take the whole "Lyon isn't effective because of Smith's captaincy" before you have to accept that there's maybe some other reason(s) involved

I generally dont rate off spinners at all but between a captain like Smith and a wk like Wade, he really is pushing **** up hill

Yeah lyon is just pure crap, basically what everyone is saying is that lyon needs everything in his favour (right captain, right field settings, right pitch, enough wear and tear etc) for him to do well. Might as well just hand him everything on a platter.

I know I sound like a broken record but Glenn Maxwell could probably do with the ball everything Lyon did. Australia don't need to waste a specialist bowling spot on a spinner (in Aus) if we don't have one that's good enough.

No idea how he is supposed to get wickets with some of the fields set for him and then when he does, he is taken off

While I agree he's been misused on occasion during his career and Smith seems to handle spin badly (see Zampa at the T20 WC), I think Lyon's time for excuses has run out now. He's played 60 Tests now and the same issues keep popping up about him every summer.

He's averaging 60 per wicket for the summer on top of a disappointing tour of Sri Lanka so I don't know that he can be considered that unlucky if he continues to hold his spot in the team.

Yeah I wasn't sure it was Lyon just not being able to land it, or Smith's captaincy, but assumed the former.

relief for Asad after a string of terrible scores he finally gets a good 100. Hopefully younis has also hit some form (on the back of an awful innings) and if azhar ali can fire again then we might be able to see some good contests in the series.

lyon is a perfectly solid spinner who has some faults but absolutely should not be replaced in australian conditions. as i hinted at last night, i think we should probably go with SOK and Holland in India straight off the bat.

honestly I'm not sure there's too many aussie posters who really big him up. Burgey isn't being serious half the time. I've called out his 4th innings failures repeatedly. I think most of us just tend to go along with Lyon, while believing he shouldn't be dropped for Xavier Doherty.

I rated Lyon highly for a long time but the Sri Lanka series was a turning point – he just never seems to deliver in Asian/Middle East conditions; almost as if the weight of expectation is too much for him. And whereas he’s almost always been reliable in home conditions, he’s currently having his worst home summer. Maybe he’ll bounce back in the rest of this series but I can’t see him doing well in India.
