Commentators are right, Southee's doing very well to extract movement from that ball. His height and easy action makes it quite easy for his fingers to do a lot of work on the ball at the point of release. Hazelwood is a similar example. Henry's makes it less easy; has to get behind the ball a lot more, but could still do better by imparting more backspin on the ball like Philander.

He just needs to stick to what he does well, both Boult and he have been guilty of attempting to bowl that shorter pitch line but they're not fast enough to do it, and it goes away from what makes them threatening.

That's the big complaint I have about both Boult and Southee, no ability to bowl to a plan and work a batsman out, most of their wickets come from the ball doing magic in the air, that's cool and all, but it's not sustainable throughout the match.

The Bangladesh series is the time to blood a new No 5 I think.

Nicholls has had a poor FC season too with Canterbury so far, so I think he needs to go back and work on his game. He's clearly badly out of touch and keeping him in the team does himself and the Black Caps no favours. He's young enough to come back better too.
Wouldn't have a problem with that at all. 13 innings (which he'll have after the 2nd dig I think) is enough. He's just not up to it. Couple of fighting knocks but nothing to suggest he's ever going to threaten averaging 40 or even 35.

That DRS process could have been sped up a lot by having the computer say if the ball is missing or umpire's call on a not-out as soon as that has been worked out. Would happen in parallel to the checks for no-ball, edge etc, and can truncate the process if it's not going to be out anyway. Doing it sequentially is not very efficient.

yeah the worst of it has stopped but feels like one of those days where there will be plenty of windy drizzle to tempt the umpires into buggering off.
