Well, no, because he'd tied Duminy right down and he tried to play a shot that wasnt there across the line, Bavuma tried to sweep aggressively but Lyon beat him in flight, and he beat Abbott in flight and got him stuck at the crease LBW. None had "shut up shop and tried to keep him out".Lyon is only dangerous and only gets wickets when the opposition are already under pressure and needing to defend/survive. You saw it yesterday, he was absolutely easy for Amla to punch around all over the show, but the moment they had to shut up shop and try keep him out, suddenly he started being effective.
He's a middling off spinner, with no variation nor flight; had he not played in a dominant Australian team most of his career, I doubt he'd have the wickets he has.
It was at the close of play, in conditions where South Africa knew they needed to bat time and get to the morning session - he was free to continue bowling wide of off stump to the left handers and get it to turn away because none of them were looking to smash him through the line of the ball. As usual, mistakes were made that gifted him wickets.Well, no, because he'd tied Duminy right down and he tried to play a shot that wasnt there across the line, Bavuma tried to sweep aggressively but Lyon beat him in flight, and he beat Abbott in flight and got him stuck at the crease LBW. He does play on confidence a bit though. Once he gets a wicket or two his bowling goes up a notch.
Well, no again. I'm not even sure what you're trying to say. "None of them were looking to smash through the line of the ball"? Duminy was, and Bavuma was clearly trying to score. Neither were "batting time" (if by that you mean shutting up shop and not trying to score). Here's the video if you want to see Duminy and Bavuma go out not shutting up shop. And Abbott's was just a good off spinner to a tail ender. It was at the close of play, in conditions where South Africa knew they needed to bat time and get to the morning session - he was free to continue bowling wide of off stump to the left handers and get it to turn away because none of them were looking to smash him through the line of the ball. .
No. Duminy played that daft shot because Lyon's pressure had stopped him scoring.Duminy wasn't trying to score, until he played that daft shot. Bavuma was trying to sweep him, not hit him through the line.
Lyon is back and bowling well. End of story."I believe in myself that my stock ball is good enough to get anyone out in the world. So I knew if I keep working hard, and keep working hard at training, things will turn."
Australia v South Africa: Nathan Lyon never doubted his ability before late wicket flurry - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
NZ tourWhen is the come back game for him
I rather got the impression Bavuma wasn't batting timeIt was at the close of play, in conditions where South Africa knew they needed to bat time and get to the morning session - he was free to continue bowling wide of off stump to the left handers and get it to turn away because none of them were looking to smash him through the line of the ball. He reminds me a little bit of Paul Wiseman from NZ, who had a similar action, similar turn and was similarly useful when bowling at people when the job was already done.
No one has said he's great. Even his GOAT nickname is sort of tongue in cheek. No one is trying to protect his legacy. Fact is he's a good spinner making the most of his abilities. And he has a few hundred test wickets. Good on him.I do love how Australian's try protect Lyon's legacy, as if they need him to be more than he is.
Duminy played the daft shot because he's prone to brain explosions, Amla showed how easy Lyon is to hit around the park, Duminy wasn't taking the right options, nor was Bavuma. Look at Lyon throughout the series when RSA weren't under pressure, he was pretty much dropped, so let's not pretend he's great, especially considering you have no other spinners in the game and still he would've been dropped prior to this.
I don't get this at all. He's possibly the most likeable guy in world cricket. Not a fan, don't like him, comes across as a ****, ok spinner.
He's shown everything to suggest he'd have had more than lyon's successo'keefe has never shown anything to suggest he'd have had lyon's success.
I think PEWS made the interesting point that when you consider wickets that don't turn a lot, an offspinner who focuses on overspin (like Lyon) vs one who focuses on sidespin (like O Keefe) is likely to be more effective vs Test quality batsmen, since handling things like drift, dip and bounce are trickier than handling sideways movement. He's shown everything to suggest he'd have had more than lyon's success
Far superior First-class numbers, out-bowled lyon pretty much every time they play together, just plain better in general
You are completely clueless mate. Spinners don't need to be Shane Warne to take wickets. You don't need fancy mystery balls. You don't need huge turn either. All you need is control, a bit of turn and subtle variations. Lyon has that. He's an old-school finger spinner. He's never going to be the centerpiece of an attack and is never going to be the most attractive bowler to watch. But he'll pressure batsmen and take wickets, which is exactly what he's done for years now.I do love how Australian's try protect Lyon's legacy, as if they need him to be more than he is.
