In more thread-related news, Kane Williamson now averages below 50 in all forms of the game
It's amazing. Since Howsie made that infamous "I've had enough of Virat Kohli" thread, Kohli has bossed it and KW's average has fallen off a cliff. I also remember someone making a "Can we all stop pretending Tim Southee isn't the second best fast bowler in the world" or something around 18 months back. Southee promptly proceeded to stink up every match he's played since then.

I look forward to the "When will Trent Boult get to 500 test wickets" thread.

Calling it now before we see posters make gambhiring threads like this about all their most-hated players from opposition sides

aka heads up for 17 "Steve Smith will be the greatest batsman of all time" threads

That was me too iirc ha.

Although let's be clear here, I've never said Kohli couldn't become world class. My problem wasn't even with him really, it was that he was rated so highly as a test cricketer whilst averaging 44 or something at 27.

There was also the Adam Voges Average Watch thread that seems to have ended his test career.
That turned into the "Let's have a Circle-Jerk over Adam Voges' Latest Failure" thread though (I was as guilty of it as the next person).

Whatever it takes!!!
Started off as a circle jerk to boast themselves and annoy the non Aussie fans though. So was always gonna end that way.

FTR no thread will change a cricketer's career better than Would Stuart Broad Make India's Strongest XI. It's on a plinth

I don't rate Smith, I also don't rate Taylor, I also don't rate Ashwin.

All of them have series and statistics you can use to counter that point, but all of them have more failings than successes when conditions got tough. If you like downhill skiing, then feel free to like those players. I prefer the guys that constantly average more than their team mates across all series because they're that much better, and show in tough conditions that they can find a way to succeed.

Smith hasn't done that yet, Williamson hasn't done it consistently enough, Root most definitely has more than the others have, Kohli is starting to show signs but none of them have the lineage of an Amla, or De Villiers or Sangakkara.

And my contention isn't that Smith is bad, my contention is that Smith is a guy whose talent means he should average 45, not 55, and without a bumper season against some of the worst bowling at test level you'll ever see from India and the Windies - that's exactly where he'd be.
I see where you're coming from. If you don't rate Smith, Taylor, Ashwin for the reasons above, that's also fine. But I think the one area you need to consider is the age and number of caps when talking about the likes of Smith, Kohli, Root, Williamson, Ashwin. There was a time when the players we argued and debated about already had a career and body of performances to show.
We are now older, and a new generation has come in. They've barely played 50 tests.

Now it could very well be the case that these guys fail to perform in challenging conditions in the future, and you will find that that game has a funny way of evening things out in the long run. Now I don't actually believe that these guys will suck ultimately and have poorer numbers, but if you feel they will, that's perfectly fine, as long as you are willing to acknowledge that they have more than half a career ahead of them and things usually change over a period of time.

Mark Waugh, Tendulkar and Lara were part of the same conversation in the early 90s

Tendulkar, Lara, Inzamam, Steve Waugh were part of the same conversation in the late 90s.

Dravid, Tendulkar, Lara, Ponting were part of the same conversation in the mid 00s

Tendulkar, Lara, Ponting and Kallis from then onwards.

That should give you a decent idea of how things change, and how people get added and removed over time. This is sport - the only thing on this planet that is based on fairness and merit for most part.

Just give it time is all I say.

And that's why it should have been directed at the sources and parties responsible for that rather than the player himself.

YK is the most underhyped, underrated and ignored batsman of this decade. It's not the fault of his contemporaries. Blame the people, media, journalists, forums like CW who engage in rating, analysing, comparing players.

haha this **** again. The problem is that you actually haven't seen Smith's good performances. Think i had this same **** conversation a year or so ago when someone brought up three of his best knocks came in 13/14 Ashes and the SA series that followed and this genius actually downplayed that by saying either he didn't see them or that Smitteh was batting too low.Try arguing with that. The bottom line is that you have to go back to 2013 to find the last series of which Steven Smith average less than 40. Australia had some monumental collapses at the time but he was the only bloke to consistently perform all over the world i mean **** it Smith scored half of the team runs last week on a pitch that was seaming like ****.

Only reason i actually responded to this is because i think Flocky is actually stating his honest opinion instead of the usual trolls albeit those opinion being pretty pretty pretty stupid.
