How Good is Tamim?

Xuhaib

International Coach
He will always be suspect to a barren periods due to the way he bats no body apart from Sehwag and Viv in the earlier generation can get away with this batting approach. Both Tamim and Umer Akmal should take note of this and look to evolve their game in order to become better test batsman.

His last 6 Test innings are now 21,14, 15, 9, 83, and 14; so he's still getting starts, but seems to be throwing his wicket away far too much, and his Test average has now dipped to exactly 38. He's undoubtedly young enough-and too good not to come again, but there's not really a hiding place for him when he's in a form slump; it's not like there's 4 or 5 other reliable batsmen to bale him out.

Has anyone spotted any glaring weaknesses in technique that are being exploited? Has he been "found out"? Much of it seems to be psychological to me.

The debate from last year about what Test sides he would get in would look a bit different now. On current form he might challenge Guptill and the Zimbabweans for a place, maybe spark a debate amongst West Indian and Sri Lankan selectors, but that's about it. I really hope he can turn it around, because only 18 months ago he looked the most exciting young batsman in the world.

Just because you can hit a ball a mile isn't an excuse to throw away technique, and laziness. That has been his downfall. But hey, he is young, let him learn.

Tbh when I've watched Tamin bat the last year or so, I get the impression he started to believe his own hype, I also think that bowlers have worked him out a bit more as well.

Worked out that he will hit the ball from anywhere into a fielder in the deep? ITSTL

Hafeez seems to have his number with the slider he bowls other then that no technical weakness just lazy cricket gets him in trouble.

Cricketer Of The Year
The problem with Tamim is not so much a technical cricketing issue but more of a non cricketing issue - his attitude. The problem is, when a young promising talent starts performing, usually he knows that while it is a good start, he has a long way to go before being considered one of the greats of his nation. Clarke started with a bang but he knew just one century is not going to make him the greatest thing Australia has seen since Don Bradman.

Problem with Bangladesh is, they don't have those great players. So when a Ashraful or Tamim performs well and are hailed by commentators and cricket analysts, they start believing they are the greatest player in the world because there is no one in their teams who did better than them.

Tamim's problem is definitely his attitude. He went to Zimbabwe and put their bowlers down but did not even manage to score above 50 in that series. Yes he has technical issues but they were there when he scored those centuries in England. He is not going to have Dravid's technique. But despite that he could have gone a long way. A waste of talent due to lack of guidance and mentoring.

If you start believing that you are great after having one good year in test cricket, you will never become a great player.

Tamim would comfortably open the batting in Tests for:

England
New Zealand
West Indies
Sri Lanka
Zimbabwe

And possibly Australia if they're okay with two aggressive left handed opening batsmen, and South Africa if they want someone younger than Stephen Cook.

Pakistan might pick him over Sami Aslam as well, and he'd definitely be ahead of Gambhir in the pecking order for India

No way would Tamim would open for Australia, probably not NZ or England either. He'd struggle to even get a game in Shield cricket.

You're massively overrating this guy because you just saw him play a decent innings.

edit: He might get a game for Australia as a subcontinent specialist ahead of Khawaja/Burns or whoever in a hypothetical scenario where he was exactly as he is now and just suddenly became available for them, given that he's played there his whole life.

do you even have any idea whats his away record in england and nz. not getting into the debate of whether he'll get in any other side but you need to know more before dismissing the idea

Not sure what your point is, because I don't see the relevance at all

Yes, just one decent innings.

Easy shoe in for NZ/Eng ahead of Guppy/Duckett/Hameed. Not even a conversation. They would be lucky to have someone like him.

In all seriousness, you're blinded by parochialism, as he is right now he'd be lucky to get a game or 2 each year in the Shield.
