Agree that 20 (100) isn't as much of an issue in Test matches on paper, but I feel it does depend on the guy at the other end too. To use England as an example, if we find a competent but slow-scoring partner for Cook (Hameed?), Cook would just go on playing his natural game since he's an experienced and by-and-large sensible, level-headed test batsman. However, if Cook goes first, I can definitely see Root proceeding to do something stupid because he feels the need to up the pace and if the ball's still swinging, he'll probably not get away with it. Roots fault, obviously, not this hypothetical opener's, but I can see it possibly see it factoring in to selectorial decisions.

Reading back, not sure I've really made a point there, but meh, sometimes I feel I should get my thoughts out there to be cruelly dissected & mocked analysed & critiqued in a thoughtful and balanced manner. Gotta learn somehow :)

Like most things in cricket it depends on the situation imo. Strike rates can be an issue. It lets bowlers, especially spinners, settle into a good rythm and gain confidence to try new things which can hurt your partner at the other end when he gets on strike. It also depends on who your partner is, if he's in good flow then you're not taking full advantage of that by not rotating the strike and letting him make the most of it. If you're batting slowly when conditions are good for batting then you're also probably losing out on some easy runs.

Of course on the flipside you have innings like the ones Pujara played in England where he played out tons of good bowling so that the rest could score. Tiring out bowlers comes handy plenty of times as well, especially if it's a 4 man attack.

In NZ's case, I don't think Latham or Williamson are really the type to be bothered by the batsman at the other end's scoring rate.

I've been almost yearning recently for Guptill to play a mind numbingly boring innings like he did in one of the tests in Australia last year (23 off 133 balls in three hours in the second innings at Brisbane was the one). At least it showed a bit of determination.

To be fair, he tried to get out for two hours in that innings and couldn't manage to do so.

I know Hesson said that India isn't a venue for typical openers, but they've missed a massive trick by not taking Jeet on tour. If they consider him the next best opener (and clearly they do) he could have debuted in the third Test - we know that Gup is cooked.

gup should just treat the next innings like a t20

and he's far from the worst. blair hartland and james marshall have test caps.

Should he have played more cricket for Australia i see his stats he done nothing wrong a average of 40 in 30 one day internationals, and he has not even played a test match for Australia, the guys cricketing talents seem to be wasted by cricket Australia cause of politics or something else, it may be to late now for Ferguson now he is 32 and near the end of his cricket career but for me he is a better batting option than the current top 7 batsman for Australia.

Was one of, if not their best ODI batsman, then busted his knee and never got picked again (2/3 ODI's post an Ashes series/world cup don't count). Always found it really weird.

His technique has more holes in it than Che Guevara.

But yeah he might have played a couple more years but he doesn't cut the top XI of LA players in the country certainly now.

This was a post I read on twitter yesterday from a high profile monkey:

Man, I can just hear the casual cricket fan pleading to 'give Ferguson a crack at Tests' #CAXIvSA #MatadorCup
Ferguson appears to be in a really good place with his batting at the moment so I feel like he could be a decent option for Tests. For ODIs we currently play Head in our lineup so clearly he could do a job for us in ODIs too.

The issue is that there are some younger bats around the country who have a similar record and are better fielders too. I might be wrong but his casualness in the field makes me think that he is a very average fielder (average used correctly here, not saying he is woeful).

BTW Ferguson's records at the 6 main test venues when playing Shield Cricket:

Ground Matches Inns Not Out Runs HS Ave 100 50
Adelaide Oval, Adelaide 43 80 7 2812 164 38.52 4 17
Bellerive Oval, Hobart 12 22 2 711 213 35.55 1 3
Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney 10 19 3 708 131 44.25 2 2
Brisbane Cricket Ground, Woolloongabba, Brisbane 8 16 1 504 132 33.60 2 1
Western Australia Cricket Association Ground, Perth 7 12 0 586 126 48.83 2 4
Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne 6 11 2 573 115 63.66 2

So the way he has performed at Adelaide has not helped him at all, that conversation rate of 4 100s vs 17 50s is the problem.

Beat me to it. Also I don't think his career is nearly over. His form has been the best of his career over the last 2 or more seasons. Voges should be his inspiration and also the man he should be trying to replace in the test team. Hoping he has a good season and make his way into the team eventually.
