I actually think the rule should apply to more things - Jonathan Trott once took a catch in his trouser pocket, which seems way more like an unfair catch than the ball clipping the helmet.
Sorry but a pocket is part of clothing - that's fair.

I recall (I think) Trescothick lamping one in Sri Lanka years ago. The fielder at short leg took evasive action but the ball lodged in the loose material in his shirt under his armpit. Very unlucky but out (and, of course, nobody would have raised an issue as it was an England batsman - if they had been fielding there would have been calls to change the Law).

Ball is ruled dead if it touches a fielder's helmet while he's wearing it.
The ball remains live - it becomes like a no ball but without the one run penalty.

Can I grab a source for the bolded? The law I quoted above only mentions protective helmets, or are you using 'external protective equipment' as a synonym for protective helmet given fielders can't actually wear any further external protective equipment?
It s in there somewhere - possibly under equipment. It;s a pretty new update to prevent close fielders wearing external shin pads. The Laws are being revised to make them easier to read and interpret - as is Tom Smith's (the umpires guide book) which, atm s too often contradictory and confusing.

well where do you draw the line
About where it is now I'd say.

I can see the logic behind the rule, just never knew about it. How long has it been a rule?
It's a Law and has been in a great many years. It was certainly in the 2000 revision but probably got added as soon as fielders helmets became a regular thing.

Okay so which one of you was this?

fidlerrr: "The difference here is the captains... on the county cricket forum on this site yesterday, we did reach the conclusion that Kohli isn't quite in the league of Root, Williamson & Smith in the longer format yet - but definitely a first pick in T20!" He's not too far behind though. And don't forget those ODIs.

This day should be bookmarked as the day when Ash made a well set KW unsure of the pitch in a beautiful spell.

It's definitely a bit disappointing that Ashwin looked absolutely toothless when the pitch offered him nothing earlier on, regardless of what happens here on.

Was the pitch not offering him anything, or was Ashwin not in the right rhythm to utilize what was in it?

He's no Murali. He's allowed a few overs to get into rhythm.

Actually yeah, he wasn't even landing it in the right areas. KW and Latham were rotating the strike really well and he couldn't keep up with having to adjust to the lefty righty combo imo.

Was he also not bowling at the right speeds? How about revs on the ball?

It's possible he looked ordinary earlier on not because the pitch had nothing in it and he had no gameplan, but rather that he couldn't find his rhythm right away and thus couldnt exploit what was in the pitch. Then in the second spell he's got the right pace, revs on the ball, finding the right areas and suddenly the pitch looks tricky.

IDK, I didnt watch it, but I feel the people are giving the pitch too much credit. It can't have changed that much within half a session.

Also fwiw I feel the catches-off-the-helmet rule shouldn't be black and white and should allow for umpire discretion? Was it intentional? Did the fielder try to use his helmet to catch the ball, or did it just get in the way? How big a role did the helmet play in the catch being taken? Leave some wiggle room for situations like this.

One really cant blame Ashwin for taking a bit of time to settle into his rhythm. To add to that, Kane was playing him so well and on the backfoot and when Ashwin realized this and pitched it further up, big daddy did not hesitate to punish him.Was a treat to watch Kane bat.

uncalled for pal i'm purely boasting about the weather here

don't worry we could scuff up the pitch to make it resemble a dustbowl easy enough

i just want to see cricket and lord knows england is too wet to play a substantial amount of it
