Sreesanth didnt make inroads with the new ball in that game tho; his first wicket came in the 29th over.

Altho he did nip Dilshan out early in the second innings for his only wicket, so maybe thats what you were referring too.

Throughout that huge slump though, whenever he strode to the crease knowing there's no manufacturing of killer strike-rates required, there was no real hint of a red ball decline. Apart from in England, where everyone's known for years Ronchi's horrible play of lateral movement would be severely up against it -

The 'ageing and declining opportunist thwarted by scarcely believable improvement of Watling' theory just doesn't really stack up in red ball cricket. Nine FC hundreds since he came here in March 2012 (only one of them in Auckland), 2022 runs @ 61.27.

Also, at this point with Guptill I could barely bring myself to disagree if Ronchi was used as a stunt opener in his place.

Notwithstanding that Ronchi hasn't scored international runs in any format since his one and only test 18 months ago. We seem to like recalling 35 year-olds to open after all chances of playing for NZ again seemed to be gone. Fulton, Bell, Redmond etc.

Aaron Redmond was the most random call up. At least the other 2 scored heavily in FC cricket and were expected to get called up.

Don't think it matters who opens. I expect them to both fail (with Ronchi doing slightly better if given the opportunity).

I'm currently expecting our 3 pie bowling spinners to get carted, and our top to collapse and expose our endless middle-lower order early IMO.

These guys are bred on these wickets, get hundreds for fun at state level against (most likely) better spin attacks. These pitches are ideal to expose our key weaknesses.

I think we should give Danny a call, maybe he can come back for one last series..

First test after this inadequate warmup is very likely to be awful - best hope is that we bat first and the wicket is very flat, so we rack up enough to earn a draw.

Yes he's still been scoring domestic FC runs, though not as opener of course. How will an engine roomer handle the fresh air at the top of the order?

As far as shots in the dark go, I'm going to hold off being too sceptical about this one for now. Particularly if Guptill plays in the first test and fails again.

Hey he scores some uphill runs in October against South Africa and Northern Districts, sometimes. Half-rat Southee is in fact one of Ronchi's favourites to face.

I think Ronchi legitimately is one of the seven most likely NZ batsmen available to score runs in India, but I have no faith in him at all opening. Sure it's India, but they'll still pick at least one seamer and give him the new ball, and that'll be a problem for Ronchi. I think I'd rather Williamson or Watling open if Ronchi was going to play, and the could backfire to such an extent that I'd just pick Guptill instead.

The current Indian XI's ability against spin is overrated. Pujara, Rahane and Ashwin are the only real good bats against spin and the rest are either inconsistent or just about average. Tricky total on a genuine turner might get really interesting.
